CHILDREN'S WORKSHOP : Garbage Game

The work of the French painter Arman will be introduced to students from 5 to 12 years, through the "Adventure of Transformation" at the Concert Hall
We all have access to creation. We have it in us. And you and me, Armand was saying, the great French painter, founding member of the New Realists group, made famous by his series of works "Trash", where he used waste, displayed in a glass box, and "Accumulations", with similar items placed in a polyester box or device, plexiglass etc.
This creator who changed our perception of "trash" and gave the French answer to pop art in the decade 1960, they are invited to meet the children, aged from 5 to 12 years, and to "imitate" the ways of his artistic expression.
This is the visual children's workshop around Armand's work at the Athens Concert Hall, which constitutes the seventh consecutive collaboration of Megaron Plus with the Center Pompidou in Paris, after the workshops around the work of Matisse, Picasso, Brancusi, Calder et al.
"The Adventure of Transformation. Everyday objects: Look at them another way!» is the title of the workshop, with Odile Fayet in charge, from tomorrow until 18 Of March, in which children will experiment with the idea of "transforming objects", as the neorealist Armand did, who was born in Nicaea on 1928 and died in New York on 2005.
There are three stages to the process: "The object's life cycle", where the child collects the objects and categorizes them, in the spirit of Arman who said that "the principle of accumulation changes our perspective on things".
In the second stage, "Object is being decrypted", the child discovers the ways in which the artist worked with the object. The third stage is about "inventing the object", where little aspiring artists assemble small colored boxes to build towers, mazes and walls, a large scale architecture.
Participation in the workshop, either for schools or individual children, it will be done in groups 30 persons. The program, with specially trained personnel, lasts an hour and a half. Information at 210-7282333

IN TEMPI : The tunnel "showed" a temple

It is from the 10th century, the first of this era to be found in the area and came "to light" after works in Kissavos

A temple of the middle Byzantine period, the only one found in the area, with a cemetery of later date, excavated in the valley of Tempe, in the framework of the works for the opening of the tunnels in Kissavos. The first evidence for the Byzantine temple was presented at an event of the association for the environment "Dryas", which took place in Larissa, the archaeologist, deputy head of the 7th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities, Stavroula Sdrolia.
"Traces of two mason banks of a sacred step were found, both in the central niche and in the south, evidence that there was a recently formed chapel", said Ms. Sdrolia in "Ethnos" and completed: "the northern portico is preserved at a lower level and shows traces of an older phase compared to that of the rest of the building".
The temple dates back to the 10th and 11th centuries and it is possible that it was destroyed by fire during the period of the Frankish conquest in 1024. It belongs to the type of road temple with a parapet, dimensions 12X11.60 meters, which bears to the east 3 semicircular niches. A cemetery was found in the surrounding area of the temple and many graves were excavated, several of which are of elaborate construction, which shows that the cemetery had organization and duration.
“So far they have been identified 50 graves, while the excavation continues and both the multiple burials and the frequent presence of young children can be attributed to an epidemic or other disaster", said Ms. Sdrolia. From the few findings of the tombs, they seem to date back to the 12th century., while the temple can be placed in the immediately preceding period.
The archaeologists point out that the lack of ceramics and other finds in the temple make it difficult to date it and they estimate that they will have safe conclusions when the excavation is completed and the study of the material proceeds. "The important thing is that it is the first temple of this era to be found in the area of Tempe, and the hypothesis of his connection with the bishopric of Lycostomi is tempting (Tempe), mentioned in Byzantine sources from the 10th century and has not been identified until today, while it is known to be transferred later ?between the 13th and 15th centuries- in Platamonas", said Ms. Rolls.
The temple is located to the east of the great and important Byzantine inn and at a distance of just 15 meters from it. The inn is a large one, rectangular building, length 27 meters and width 7 meters, with wide walls 1 meter, built on the site of a Roman station. The construction of the inn dates back to the time of Emperor Theophilos (829-842), and in fact traces of Hellenistic habitation and part of a cemetery were found under the complex.
The inn, extent 500 sq.m., offered a breath of relief, good food and wine to travelers who were almost walking 3 hours of walking in the valley, to reach Larissa or Northern Greece.

Global SOS for monuments

IN A’ ATHENS CEMETERY
The Cemetery is on the list of monuments at risk for the 2012, as it faces huge problems, even statics for some of his tombstones.
The homeland sleeps deeper than "Sleeping" by Giannoulis Halepas when it comes to its monuments. Not the ancient or Byzantine ones. Not even the abandoned ones. The A’ Cemetery of Athens is one of the most important "living" monuments of the country. However, is on the list of monuments in danger for the 2012.
The list is drawn up by the World Monuments Fund and the Cemetery was found there as it faces huge problems, even statically, for some of his tombstones. The application-proposal for inclusion was made by the Municipality of Athens itself, in order to garner both the spotlight and help.
As stated in the relevant text on the organization's website, the A’ Cemetery is the oldest in the capital. It was created 1830, shortly after the establishment of the new Greek state.
There rest many men and women who brightened our public life: politicians, heroes of the Revolution, artists etc. The old man of Moria is buried there, Melina Mercouri and Jules Dassin, George Seferis, Costas Varnalis, Manos Katrakis, Tasos Livaditis, Elli Lampeti and many more people from those who glorified the name of Greece.
Among his tombstones there are many important examples of neoclassicism from the 19th as well as the 20th century: huts and temples built on tombs as well as tombstones and other structures.
Many of them present enormous problems today, even static and must urgently receive first aid.
Also the surface of the marble architectural members and sculptures shows massive corrosion – the best-known statue that has been in danger for decades is the beautiful "Sleeping" of Halepa. As time passes, without measures being taken, these problems grow. Until at some point they will be impossible to deal with.
Greece's poor financial situation is currently a reality. But also before, in times when the finances of the state were better, no one showed any interest in this important monument.
No one took steps to encourage the preservation of the sculptural treasures that exist there. Even legal problems - since monuments have owners who sometimes do not consent to their removal or repair- are an inhibitory factor. The root cause, Nevertheless, it is the absence of any will on the part of the state.

Ephesus and Hagia Sophia
The monuments included in the list of the Organization for the 2012 it's a lot – from our country only this. From our neighboring Turkey Aphrodisias is an ancient city that often makes this list as does Ephesus (the second due to high traffic, without taking parallel measures).
also, for several years it was Hagia Sophia until openings in its roof were restored and rainwater stopped entering, which spoiled the famous Byzantine mosaics found under the whitewashed surfaces of the walls.
Being on the list is a step towards taking some action with help, even with financing, of the Global Fund. But the funding is not so high as to be able to solve the problem. For’ therefore additional and many measures are required. Let's hope the motherland wakes up in time.
  • In Cyprus
From Cyprus to the list of the Organization for the 2012 the medieval city of Famagusta has been included.

Ancient Greece and Byzantium "travel" to the USA

300 masterpieces will be presented the 2013 in Washington and the Getty, while a second exhibition is being prepared for the prehistoric years
Greece will make a double dynamic visit to America on 2013 and 2014 with two major exhibitions. The temporary title of the first is "Byzantium. Masterpieces from Greek collections" («Byzantium. Masterpieces from Greek Collections). The second will present Greek antiquities and will be organized in collaboration with "National Geographic".
About 300 masterpieces of Greek museums, public and private, monasteries, but also findings of recent excavations, they will travel in the fall 2013 to the US to be shown first at the National Gallery in Washington and then at the Getty Museum in Malibu, California. The exhibition aims to introduce Americans to Greek culture, which runs through Byzantium from its beginning to its end (330 A.D. up to 1453). It was approved yesterday by the Central Archaeological Council and has the parallel goal of filling a gap, "responding" to the corresponding exhibitions that have been held in recent years by Turkey in the USA and elsewhere.
It is organized by the general directorate of antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with the Benaki Museum. It will consist of five sections, with temporary titles "From the ancient to the Byzantine world", "The Christian World", "The Intellectuals", "The joys of life" and "Byzantium at a crossroads".
However, the cost of the exhibition is a thorn in Greece's side, since it amounts to 3,6 million. euro, a fact that has already created an issue due to bad times, although, as the Minister of Culture has stated, Pavlos Geroulanos, last November, it is to be covered by grants with the assistance of OPAP. The exhibition is organized by a twelve-member committee, in which Emilia Geroulanou also participates, president of the Benaki Museum, as well as service executives and teachers. Only for the insurance of valuable items are required approx 2,5 million. euro.
The visitor will be able to see among others: the coexistence of Christianity and paganism in important cities of the ancient world such as Athens, Corinth and Sparta. The gradual Christianization of the empire through the appropriation of the pagan pictorial repertoire in the formation of a new code of symbols and the emergence of Christian ideas of eternal life. The close dependence of state and Church. The domestic artistic expression etc
"The intellectuals" is an extremely interesting section of the exhibition since it presents aspects of the intellectual life of the empire with an emphasis on the dominance of the Greek language in the administration, in cultural life, in the medieval copies of ancient Greek texts by Byzantine scribes and the important role these texts played in the education of the Byzantines.
There is also "The joys of life" which present daily life in Byzantium with sub-sections dedicated to the private sphere (with an emphasis on home decoration, in tableware and in general household equipment) but also in personal grooming, where, among other things, an important collection of Byzantine jewelry is exhibited. "Byzantium at a crossroads", end, analyzes the continuous dialogue of the Byzantine Empire with other political powers and peoples, either through military conflicts or through diplomatic approaches.
An equally important report is being prepared in parallel by the ministry, in collaboration with "National Geographic" magazine. It will concern the ancient Greeks and their presence throughout the centuries, from prehistoric times to the beginning of Hellenistic times. Its aim is to coincide with the exhibition on Byzantium, thereby erasing a strong cultural presence of our country in American cities.

STEVEN SPIELBERG : He is running with "Horse" for an Oscar

"War Horse"
The new film cost him 70 from. dollars was also needed for the filming 6.000 comrades, 300 horses and three containers with objects of A’ Global
The "War Horse", a boundless odyssey of friendship, filmed in the countryside of Devon, England
Friendship and loyalty. Passion, faith and courage. He inspired a Hollywood cinema that deals with these ideals, Steven Spielberg has taken on the film adaptation of a popular book from the 80s, similar style, which was also transferred to the theater stage in London and Broadway with success. The "War Horse", Oscar-winning film with British stars, aired since Christmas in the United States, while it is expected in Greek theaters on 19 January.
Spielberg himself, in any case, he avoids talking about the Oscar chances of his films (the 3D adventure “The Adventures of Ten Ten: The Secret of the Unicorn" premiered in Europe in November and came out in America just a few days ago, on Christmas Eve), having been "burnt" in the past. Keeping a low profile, the director has said that "he was fascinated by the story because it transported him exactly to that time", after seeing the play.
He got a matching glove, in other words, Spielberg's story by author Michael Morpurgo, which takes place in the era of A’ World War, shortly after its outbreak, and recounts the exemplary friendship of a boy with his horse. The hero, the teenager Albert, he sets out to find his horse on the battlefield, since his father sells it to the British cavalry. He leaves his farm, ranks in the army, while Joey, his horse, it is at the forefront of the French front and changes with its presence the lives of those who meet it (English, French, Germans).
What could be more fitting to the "Spielbergian" cinema than this short story, one finds. So the director set out to make it into a movie. He commissioned Richard Curtis to write the screenplay (“An evening in Notting Hill, «Love actually», "Four Weddings and a Funeral") and chose as the protagonist the unknown young Englishman Jeremy Irvine, native of the English theater scene, for "the absolute provincial innocence" she saw in him. With production costs amounting to 70 million. dollars, filmed the borderless odyssey of friendship in the countryside of Devon, England. Used - according to official figures- 300 horses and 6.000 comrades, while he scattered in his work also objects of A’ World War, from the personal collection of Peter Jackson who sent them to him in three containers!
"She won me over with her authenticity and honesty", notes Steven Spielberg for the story and admits that he became interested in horses thanks to his daughter's love of’ these. “I hope it brings people together, as her message, in its essence, people from different countries and nationalities can feel it", concludes.
The poster and the …tissues
In the final stretch for the announcement of his Oscar nominations 2012, "War Horse" is galloping along as one of the favorites for a spot in the best picture category (yesterday the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled the poster of the 84th Academy Awards – a collage of the most famous movie stills, awarded with the golden statuette). The emotional finale – climax of the story requires a lot… tissues from the spectators, while American critics praise: "Technically great, proudly sentimental and unabashedly old-fashioned, the ”War horse” is a moving drama that tugs hard at the heartstrings with Spielberg's usual customary law", we read.
The cast
The "War Horse", produced by Dreamworks and distributed by Disney, starring Jeremy Irvine, Peter Malan, Emma Watson, David Thewlis and Benedict Cumberbatch. The director of photography Janusz Kaminski and the veteran music composer John Williams stood by the director's side for the umpteenth time.

ALEXIOU-GALANI : 40 melodic years "In blue velvet"

"Because the future is planned through the past…», the two interpreters make an appointment at "Pallas" for 15 "ef’ of all matter" musical performances
"I feel like I was on’ a horse and I galloped…», says Haris Alexiou about the musical journey of life and is completed by Dimitra Galani, "A singer's face is the songs he chooses to sing"
Two women, two voices, two parallel stories… The two female names – symbol of the Greek song, Haris Alexiou and Dimitra Galani, they will be together on the stage of "Pallas", Is the motto of the 16th Spare Parts Bazaar 13 January, in order to give 15 joint musical performances under the general title "On Blue Velvet".
Fifteen "velvet" nights, Well, will offer the public the two interpreters who meet on the same stage after years. The strong relationship that binds them, however, the common and important experiences of the past, the love for the same faces and of course for good singing, he never let them get away. They were communicating, even when one was far from the other, they followed each other's steps, they were together for a while and then they each went their separate ways.
The route
Somehow forty whole years passed. Forty years full of great songs, important collaborations, thousands of hours in recording studios and even more on stage, in front of the microphone, face to face with all this world that adored them: "I don't know how most people imagine this route. I feel like I was on’ a horse and galloped and ran and passed through various places, I met various people, I was glad to meet them, that I was singing different things, which I had accepted…», says Haris Alexiou characteristically, referring to the musical journey of her life.
Dimitra Galani again describes in her own way the reason and value of this coexistence: “Because the dizzying speeds of the record market make the 40 years seem too many. Because it can be like that for an artist's career and certainly like that for a person's life. Because a singer's face is the songs he chooses to sing. Because success means that an artist can manage his past as if it were present and because through the past the future is planned…».
Through their significant past, Well, the two interpreters will lay the foundations for their future. And surely this meeting of theirs will provide an opportunity to escape from the harsh reality through music.
For the program that the two will present, they do not want to reveal many details. What is certain is that it will be based on simplicity and essence. Besides, big songs and big voices don't need special support.
YESTERDAY'S SONGS
The artistic chemistry between Haroula Alexiou and Dimitra Galani was shown in the best way through the joint album that the two recorded in 1981 entitled "Yesterday's Songs". Using their voices as their main weapon and accompanied by only a guitar and a harmonica, they performed a series of favorite songs by important composers: from Hadjidakis and Theodorakis to Loizos and Neo Kyma, and from folk to popular foreign ballads. In the repertoire of this disc which sold 100.000 the songs "Thalassa Platia" were also copies, "Jamaica", "The Road", "The Train", "Don't get tired of m’ you love", "Love that has become a double-edged sword", but also "The House of Rising Sun".
EXTENSION
From the beginning, the two performers intended to give ten performances, but after the great acceptance of the public they decided to extend their joint appearances for five more nights.

They demand the exhumation of Pablo Neruda

ALLEGATIONS OF MURDER
The Communist Party of Chile requested the exhumation of the body of Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, in order to investigate rumors that he may have been poisoned.
The Nobel Prize-winning poet died in Santiago on 23 September 1973, in age 69 years, twelve days after Augusto Pinochet took power in a military coup.
Pablo Neruda's death certificate lists prostate cancer as the cause of death. However, his former driver, Manuel Araya, stated that he was given an injection which caused cardiac arrest. also, reported that the poet a few hours before he died was walking and talking with him normally.
Araya claims agents injected Neruda with poison at the hospital on Pinochet's instructions.
Communist Party lawyer, Eduardo Contreras, stated that there are doubts surrounding the poet's death. Contreras says the hospital where Pablo Neruda was being treated for cancer gave him a painkiller injection and a short time later he died of heart failure.
However, believes he received a lethal injection.
No proof
The request for the exhumation of the poet's body is undertaken by the lawyer Mario Caroza, who will examine the rumor of a possible murder of the poet by the authorities.
