The Circus of Vietnam for young and old

A show for the holidays from a circus with tradition and a special national signature: the New Vietnam Circus invites you on a magical journey to the Far East, at 23 and 25-29 December 2011 on the Central Stage of the House of Letters & Arts.

New Circus from Hanoi offers us a different poetic journey to the distant land of the East. This group of young artists that comes from the circus grounds, of music, of theater and street art will remind us of images and sensations from the everyday life of a peaceful village lost in the rice fields.

With simple means and original scenery made of bamboo, Làng Tôi draws inspiration from the rich Vietnamese tradition but also from the new techniques of circus art, offering young and old alike a unique stage experience that defies the laws of gravity. The audience will not only come into contact with a completely different kind of wandering and circus but will be able to discover the high quality expression of the physical technique of the Eastern theater.

Importantly, Vietnamese artists who lived and worked in France and Germany returned to their artistic roots, enhancing the tradition with new techniques and forms, offering a spectacle that combines masterful acrobatics, martial arts, traditional Vietnamese music, pantomime and dance. For young and old, a sight that we rarely have the opportunity to enjoy in the heart of Athens.

Cesaria Evora passed away

James Henry: He was illiterate until 92 and after…he also wrote a book!

Captain James Henry's feat is admirable, who learned to read at age 92 years old and wrote a book at age 98. For so many years no one understood that he was illiterate.

Six years ago he learned that George Dawson learned letters at age 98 years old and wrote a book at age 101 and said: “I will too”. He spent hours with a dictionary in hand, looking for the right words, while he had significant help from a retired teacher friend of his.

"Pinocchio – The truth under our noses" about the SOS villages

From 27 until 30 December
The play "Pinocchio – The truth under our noses" with the shows he staged in October collected a sum of 12.000 euro, which were made available to the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Autistic People.
After the success he achieved, the show goes up for the second time, for Christmas days.
Based on the non-profit participation of its contributors, the proceeds of these performances are offered to SOS Children's Villages to support their operation. The show is organized by the Urban non-profit company "Anthropon Erga".

More visits to the country's Museums

The country's museums showed a significant increase in the number of their visitors, according to the Greek Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). Creating playgrounds for use by children with mobility problems and ensuring their access to all municipal structures and schools, increase 5,3% occurred this year in July, while receipts increased by 5,7%. During January- July, in any case, a decrease is maintained 7,6% in the number of visitors and 6,8% in collections. Also according to ELSTAT, in July there is an increase in visitors to the archaeological sites by 15,6% and increasing the corresponding collections in percentage 5,7%. The seven month, an increase was recorded 11,7% to visitors and increase 8,8% in collections.
