Connecting to the source… Technology companies, academic institutions, non-profit organizations and other bodies jointly set up a fund of 14 million. dollars to support the News Integrity Initiative- an international initiative to help Internet users make accurate judgments about news (or "news") who read and share online. The mission of the News Integrity Initiative is to promote what is considered "literacy" in the news (news literacy), to increase trust in journalism around the world and assist in a better-informed public debate. The News Integrity Initiative will fund related research and programs, while meetings will be convened with industry experts. The founding funders are Facebook, το Craig Newmark Philanthropic Fund, το Lord Foudation, the Democracy Fund, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the Tow Foundation, to AppNexus, Mozilla and Betaworks. The initiative will operate as an independent venture of the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, under the supervision of the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism, who will answer to Sarah Bartlett, head of the CUNY J-School. The journalism school will coordinate the activities that will take place within the framework of the initiative, including surveys, special programs and events. “As part of the Facebook Journalism Project, we want to give people the tools they need to make better sense of the information they see online," said Campbell Brown, head of Facebook's News Partnerships.
