Virtual walk in ancient Pella

3D tour of the ancient Macedonian kingdom, but also to 150 castles of Argolis, Arcadia and Corinthia

How would you feel if you could "walk" the streets of the ancient Macedonian capital, of Pella, or the Goats, where Philip flourished and where Alexander started; And even without having to leave your home;

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism ensured that this possibility would soon exist. Thanks to the digital program "Virtual Tour Network of the Ancient Macedonian Kingdom", prepared by the IZ Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, and in the NSRF, in about two years this will be possible. Archaeological – digital "walks" from afar, guided tours via "smart" mobile devices up close, representations of ancient cities and monuments, as well as a wealth of information will include the work approved by the Central Archaeological Council.

It is an inspired and supplementary work of the digital museum about Alexander the Great, which is also constituted by the rector Angeliki Kottaridis. An experienced archaeologist, with special knowledge in the subject and love for the promotion of the ancient Macedonian kingdom.
"It is a permanent one, as well as a wasteful advertisement of our antiquities", the director of the Monuments Archive, Elena Kountouri, told the Central Archaeological Council. "It motivates the internet user to visit the sites, to see closely what passes through his screen".

The director of Prehistory – of Classical Antiquities Nicoletta Valakou noted that the program is extremely well documented and that it presents all the details of the monuments. The general secretary, Lina Mendoni, stated that it will function in addition to the works that have been done in the premises, in the monuments and museums of Central Macedonia. Another digital program was approved by KAS the day before yesterday. It is about "Digital accessibility and promotion of the castles of Argolis, of Arcadia and Corinthia", edited by the 25th Ephorate of Byzantine Antiquities. It's about you 150 castles and fortified places.

The registrar Dimitris Athanasoulis explained that there will be a special application for portable digital devices
devices, but also pages for each castle and monument on facebook and other social networks. Other features of modern technology such as google will be used, flickr, wikipedia etc.
In both cases, 3D technology will be used and documentaries will be used.

When books are read by companies

A workshop is held on Saturday at the National Library

Of the recent phenomena in the field of Greek books - but not at all unknown in the European field- reading clubs have helped to promote the love of reading and promote the book. How are they created?, to whom they are addressed, how they work in the context of education; These issues, will be discussed at a workshop on "Books and friends" co-organized by the THALIS+FRIENDS group and the National Library of Greece, on Saturday 28 April, Is the motto of the 16th Spare Parts Bazaar 10.00 a.m. until 2.00 Creation "regarding the modern administration and the European ones, in the Reading Room of the National Library (University 32).

The THALIS Group + FRIENDS was founded in 2005 by mathematicians and writers Apostolos Doxiadis, Tevkros Michaelidis and the professor of the Department of Statistics of the Athens University of Economics Petros Dellaporta. Their need to explore the relationship between math and storytelling led them to create reading clubs, initially in schools and then in various places, from bookstores and cafes to home living rooms. Today, the THALIS+FRIENDS group has been the inspiration for the creation 350 reading clubs throughout Greece, from Crete to Soufli.

During the conference, authors will talk about the relationship between storytelling and mathematics, while coordinators from the reading clubs will share their experiences with the audience..

Summer opening hours for archaeological sites and museums is proposed by the Ministry of Culture

Instructions to the general secretary of Culture of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, regarding the issue of the summer schedule of the country's archaeological sites and museums, sent yesterday by the Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism Petros Alivizatos.

The undersecretary, recognizing the delay in the recruitment procedures of seasonal staff through ASEP due to elections, which does not allow the issuance of a relevant administrative act for summer hours, as well as the intense protests of the tourist world, requested the immediate implementation of temporary operating hours from 9.30 a.m. until 5.30 pm.

The temporary operation during the specified period negates the need for staffing in two shifts, in order for the spaces to function even after 3 pm.

The public will be able to visit the areas of responsibility of the Ministry of Health and Welfare from 10 a.m. until 5 pm, thus overcoming the staffing difficulty faced by the regional services in correctional staff.

This schedule does not apply to archaeological sites that already operate with two shifts and beyond 3 pm, such as the Acropolis of Athens, which continue with their existing schedule.

Alongside, the deputy minister sent instructions for better utilization of the existing prison staff, requesting his immediate disengagement from any tasks and facilities that are not his competence and requested that the services performed be readjusted, in order to achieve better field guarding.

At a height of a thousand meters in Messinia : An unknown ancient temple opposite Epicureus was discovered

The tops of the mountains,  the sky and two ancient temples!  Across from each other,  up there on the mountains of Ilia and Messinia,  the well-known Epicurean Apollo on one side and a "new" temple,  which is only now being revealed,  on the other hand. At an altitude of 1000 meters and after traveling at least 7 kilometers of impassable, rural dirt road above the village of Ano Melpeia until you reach the hill with the chapel of the Prophet Ilias, the remains of this temple were discovered by the archaeologist Dr. Xeni Arapogianni, previously head of the Greek Antiquities Ephorate.

Dated late 6th – early 5th BC. century this unknown temple is preserved unfortunately only in terms of its foundation,  however, the space was scattered around it with architectural members, which had been used to build a small church.  As Mrs. Arapogianni says, when the small church was demolished to build a new one - eventually this was done on a neighboring hill -, the place was filled with letters,  triglyphs and other members of the ancient temple.

This is what happened 1995 but as soon as 2010   the excavation began,  which revealed not only the existence of the building but also extraordinary findings: Ceramics,  copper objects and the most interesting, a large number of iron weapons and mainly spearheads that were tributes to the temple. But also a bronze statuette of a naked man came to light,  probably a warrior since he is holding a spear in one hand.

"This fact allows us to conclude that the temple was dedicated to a war deity",  says Mrs. Arapogianni. Adding: "The direct visual contact with the temple of Epicurean Apollo but also the similarity of the vows, mainly of iron spears, they could attribute the temple of Ano Melpeia to Apollo, but without excluding the worship of Artemis or Athena".

The temple was found in "Petroula" which is located on the outskirts of Mount Tetrazi. The top of the hill where it was built had been leveled by the ancients just to accommodate the building. The temple was long,  according to calculations,  about the 23  meters,  although its maximum surviving dimensions are 20.65×10.75 meters while the thickness of the walls ranges from 0,80 to 0,90 μ. A part of it though,  the east,  it is completely destroyed, because it had served as the foundation of the Christian temple.

But the interesting thing is,  that inside it Mrs. Arapogiannis revealed a smaller building with surviving dimensions of 15.60x2.18 meters made of clay stones, without binding material, the eastern side of which was also damaged. The floor of the temple and the inner building was covered with small ones, almost slab-like stones connected with mortar.

“In my opinion this was the first temple, the archaic,  which dates back to the end of the 6th BC.  century. It was probably built by the Spartans who were the conquerors of Messinia and when later the Messinians were freed they built a bigger temple in the same place",  says the archaeologist.

Copper bracelets ending in a snake's head, copper small vessel a copper plate with a relief of a woman holding a branch, iron hilts and iron fittings of utensils and among them in excellent preservation a bronze cylindrical stem terminating in a lion's head. And of course the iron weapons and at least 20 spearheads. These are findings from the sanctuary ,  which the faithful dedicated to the worshiped deity. Also, one of the most important finds was a votive inscription, engraved on the rim of a portion of a clay vessel, where the word stands out: TOLERANCE.

But there is a problem:  No columns or capitals have been identified anywhere. Only epistles and triglyphs with metopes and cornices,  all stone. “I think it might have had wooden columns, but this was not usual at all. Therefore, further research is needed, are there somewhere...",  as Mrs. Arapogianni says. Except that she herself can no longer come back, after the "reserve" caught up.

Women also fought in ancient times

This shows the bronze statuette of a female figure in the Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbein

Not only men fought in Roman antiquity, but also the women and even with the same weapons! At least this is what the bronze statuette of a female figure shows, located at Museum of Art and Industry, in Hamburg and now under new study is now considered, that she was a female gladiator.

With long groomed hair and wearing only a loincloth, that is, bare-breasted, this woman is represented with one hand raised holding the gladiators' small curved sword _sicca_ and seems to be celebrating a victory. Her head turns to the ground _looking perhaps at the defeated opponent; _ while her knee is bandaged again, as gladiators used to do. So until today the small statue was considered to depict an athlete. In particular, the sword was interpreted as a string (the instrument of athletes for scraping from their bodies, of the powder and oil with which they anointed the skin). The different view comes from researcher Alfonso Manas of the University of Granada, which lists the data:

First of all, this is only the second depiction of a female gladiator, which is known to us. The other one, which is in the British Museum comes from a relief of Halicarnassus. And this rarity, as Manas says perhaps also indicates the rarity of the phenomenon. As far as the written sources are concerned, only twelve records exist, referring to female gladiators. All of them were of low social class, i.e. slaves, therefore their breasts remained uncovered, contrary to, what was going on with the gymnasts. One more thing is, that about 200 μ. X. under Septimius Severus, their presence in the arenas was banned.

There is, however, a problem _as far as this particular statuette is concerned_ with the fact, that female gladiators must also have worn various protective gear on their bodies, depending on the men. That is, helmets, chest or shoulder fittings etc. But the gladiator of Hamburg, it doesn't bring anything, not even her helmet and this causes the researchers to be surprised. Another parameter besides, which they themselves raise regarding her nudity is the attempt to arouse eroticism in the militarily raised Romans, who would thus have the opportunity to see women in traditionally male roles. However, the sources do not mention anything of the sort, rather than just the expression of admiration for the "fair competition" of women as well.
