Uncle Vanias from the historic Moscow Theater in Badminton

When one of the most importanttheatersof Europe, ofEvgeniy Vakhtagov(Vakhtangov) and a director with a unique
vision (Rim Tumin) join forces then we can only talk about an improbable, genius result.
A new subversive look at a classic masterpiece of Russian drama and a subversive theater, history, mythical, which carries in its scrolls the glory and the fragrance of allRussian theater. A wonderful one, almost mystical, meeting that we will have the unique opportunity to enjoy in Badminton, exactly as it was first performed in the theater itselfEugene Vakhtangovat 2 September of 2009.
Then the active reaction of the public, as well as the Russians, but also of foreign critics led even the Minister of Culture A. Avdeev to say characteristically that "this production is an amazing re-examination of Chekhov" expressing at the same time the certainty of its great worldwide success. Of course he was justified!
The vision of a theater group that could shake up the stagnant waters of the Moscow theater establishment, born in 1911 through the eyes and thoughts of a director and actor, by Eugene Vakhtangov. During his tenure the promising new theater saw itself steal the limelight from the rest of the more commercial "offshoots" of the Moscow Art Theater with just two productions (Maeterlinkck: The Miracle of St. Anthony 1921 by Gozzi : Turandor-1922).
That's how it is 1926, as expected, the theater was finally baptized with the name of its creator and the most important Russian directors rush to become part of his vision(Meyerhold, Popov, Zavadsky and Akimov). Especially Akimov's unorthodox translation of Hamlet with Shostakovich's music, the 1932, she was the one who introduced this theatrical microcosm to the whole world and caused the first waves of admiration inside and outside of Russia.
Among the important also directors, that run to contribute to the myth, we also discover Okhlopkov and Pogodin as well as a whole series of brilliant young creators who lead decade after decadeVakhtangov Theaterin the 21st century. The high artistic standards and the subversive look they introduce with each of their performances succeed to this day and keep it in its place, perhaps Russia's greatest theatrical myth.
One of those brilliant young creators, it's also Rimas Tuminas and it's not the first time he's produced a Chekhov play. The Three Sisters and his Cherry Orchard, they won public and critical acclaim. Chekhov's plays offer ground for exploration, clarification of the essence, justification of the species. Every Tuminas production is a new step towards the meaning of that mysterious word 'comedy', which so belies the context of the plot. Uncle Vanya's production has already been recognized as one of the best events of recent seasons in Moscow, while the work of S.Makovetsky and V.Simonov deserves to be mentioned in the world encyclopedia of theater.
The most interesting of course in the case of Rimas Tuminas, it is the way he perceives and "translates" this Russian classic masterpiece. No,  he didn't vandalize either, nor rewrite the text, didn't cut it either. Just read the text again, as if there were no interpretations before him. Why, there is nothing ordinary, beautiful, intimate. Chekhov's mansion surrounded by gardens does not exist, there are no comfortable armchairs, nor a table laid with a lace tablecloth and a warm samovar, nor the sense of a Home where many generations have lived... There is only empty space, deserted by life, the theater space with the gray corridors, an alabaster lion – a symbol of St. Petersburg – may be the birthplace of the ancestor who built the mansion, there is a workbench with rough slabs, an old sofa and several chairs.
Chekhov's characters, as Tuminas saw them and as embodied by the actors, strongly remind us of a part of ourselves. They live in conditions of conflicting ambitions, philosophize, they work hard or they are lazy, serve and consume. They are very different, but also similar – everyone's life went wrong. Why; We discover this from scene to scene, from the dialogues, the fights, revelations and sarcasm. People discover the principles of the theater of the absurd in the works of Chekhov. His characters say something and then do something else, while they think in a completely different way. Tuminas' Uncle Vanya deals with what the characters think and confess in times of spiritual turmoil. Sometimes they are incoherent, like Uncle Vanya or very violent, like Astrov. But their confessions burst forth from their souls so impetuously, like stepping out of a stuffy room into the fresh air.
"Our Uncle Vanias is needed today to support us, let's not be cynical, rude, unconscious people", λέει ο Rimas Tuminas. “With everything he faced in his life, he did not lose the virtue of honesty and continued to work. Near our theater, there is a monument to Princess Turandot. Maybe we should build a monument to Uncle Vanya".
In the best show for the 150 years of Chekhov, from the great Vagtagov Theater with the 100 years of theatrical history star, including, the award-winning "People's Artists" Sergey Macovetsky;, Ludmila Maksakova, Vladimir Simonov, Anna Dubrovskaya, Yury Kraskov και Galina Konovalova.
 
RIM TUMINAS (Artistic Director)
Winner of the State Prize of the Russian Federation and the Zolotaya Maska Russian Theater Prize.
He was born on 20 January 1952 in the city of Kelme (Lithuania). During the period 1970 – 1974 studied at the Lithuanian Conservatory. The 1978 graduated from the production department of GITIS (class of I. Tumanov). His first production was the play January by J. Radickov (1978) at the Drama Theater of the Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic, while his first production in Moscow was O.Zagradnik's Peacock Tune (1979) at the K.S.Stanislavsky Theater. From the 1979 up to 1990, worked at the State Academic Dramatic Theater of Lithuania (State Academic Drama Theater of Lithuania), and from 1994 became its art director. The 1999, Tuminas left the theater, with the last productions being Oedipus Rex by Sophocles (1998) and Shakespeare's Richard III (1999). Rimas Tuminas directed more than 20 plays in many theaters in Lithuania and abroad. His work abroad includes Theios Vanias (1992) and the Seagull (1993) of Chekhov in Finland, and Moliere's Don Juan in Iceland (1995). The 1990, Tuminas founded the Small Theater of Vilnius (Small Theater of Vilnius).
There, the following productions were presented: Chekhov's Cherry Orchard (1990), Brecht's Galileo (1991), God, Smile to Us του G.Kanovichus (1994), Masquerade by M. Lermontov (1997), which also traveled abroad. (Finland, Sweden, Poland, Iceland, Ms.)  Tuminas' productions successfully participate in festivals such as the International Baltic Theater Spring, Baltic House, Life, Contact, International Chekhov Theatre Festival, etc. After the successful show Masquerade, which won the Russian National Theater Award Zolotaya Maska in the category "Best Foreign Production 1998" in Moscow and within the framework of the 3rd Chekhov Festival, Tuminas was invited to the Sovremennik Theater, where he produced Playing… Schiller! the 2000. The 2002, on the stage of the E.Vakhtangov Theater, Rimas Tuminas produced Gogol's The Inspector General. Ancient Greece and Byzantium "travel" to the USA

300 masterpieces will be presented the 2013 in Washington and the Getty, while a second exhibition is being prepared for the prehistoric years
Greece will make a double dynamic visit to America on 2013 and 2014 with two major exhibitions. The temporary title of the first is "Byzantium. Masterpieces from Greek collections" («Byzantium. Masterpieces from Greek Collections). The second will present Greek antiquities and will be organized in collaboration with "National Geographic".
About 300 masterpieces of Greek museums, public and private, monasteries, but also findings of recent excavations, they will travel in the fall 2013 to the US to be shown first at the National Gallery in Washington and then at the Getty Museum in Malibu, California. The exhibition aims to introduce Americans to Greek culture, which runs through Byzantium from its beginning to its end (330 A.D. up to 1453). It was approved yesterday by the Central Archaeological Council and has the parallel goal of filling a gap, "responding" to the corresponding exhibitions that have been held in recent years by Turkey in the USA and elsewhere.
It is organized by the general directorate of antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with the Benaki Museum. It will consist of five sections, with temporary titles "From the ancient to the Byzantine world", "The Christian World", "The Intellectuals", "The joys of life" and "Byzantium at a crossroads".
However, the cost of the exhibition is a thorn in Greece's side, since it amounts to 3,6 million. euro, a fact that has already created an issue due to bad times, although, as the Minister of Culture has stated, Pavlos Geroulanos, last November, it is to be covered by grants with the assistance of OPAP. The exhibition is organized by a twelve-member committee, in which Emilia Geroulanou also participates, president of the Benaki Museum, as well as service executives and teachers. Only for the insurance of valuable items are required approx 2,5 million. euro.
The visitor will be able to see among others: the coexistence of Christianity and paganism in important cities of the ancient world such as Athens, Corinth and Sparta. The gradual Christianization of the empire through the appropriation of the pagan pictorial repertoire in the formation of a new code of symbols and the emergence of Christian ideas of eternal life. The close dependence of state and Church. The domestic artistic expression etc
"The intellectuals" is an extremely interesting section of the exhibition since it presents aspects of the intellectual life of the empire with an emphasis on the dominance of the Greek language in the administration, in cultural life, in the medieval copies of ancient Greek texts by Byzantine scribes and the important role these texts played in the education of the Byzantines.
There is also "The joys of life" which present daily life in Byzantium with sub-sections dedicated to the private sphere (with an emphasis on home decoration, in tableware and in general household equipment) but also in personal grooming, where, among other things, an important collection of Byzantine jewelry is exhibited. "Byzantium at a crossroads", end, analyzes the continuous dialogue of the Byzantine Empire with other political powers and peoples, either through military conflicts or through diplomatic approaches.
An equally important report is being prepared in parallel by the ministry, in collaboration with "National Geographic" magazine. It will concern the ancient Greeks and their presence throughout the centuries, from prehistoric times to the beginning of Hellenistic times. Its aim is to coincide with the exhibition on Byzantium, thereby erasing a strong cultural presence of our country in American cities.

Look for your own pace

Workshop for teenagers at the House of Letters and Arts
To explore the concept of identity, to express and create, through their contact with the theater arts, of modern dance and music, the teenagers who will participate in the artistic expression workshop organized on Saturday are invited 4 and on Saturday 11 February at the House of Letters and Arts.

The introduction to the topic will be made with the presentation of a kinetic drama by Antigoni Avdi, with audio support by composer Reynaldo Young. Starting with the action and texts related to the subject, young people will investigate, through experiential theater activities, questions regarding their identity. “Who am I; What would I like to be?; What are my desires and dreams; What are my values ​​for life; How can I deal with the difficulties I encounter?; What gives me strength;» Young people will have the opportunity to play various roles, to experience situations through different perspectives, better understand themselves in relation to others and recognize their uniqueness. Alongside, they will have the opportunity, through movement and sound, to abstractly express their emotional world.

To participate in the workshop, no previous theater experience is necessary, dance or music.

Aimed at teenagers 13-18 years

Nikos Gounaris sings Macedonia and Tsertos

Concert-tribute to the leading performer and creator

Today, Wednesday, a tribute to the leading performer and creator Nikos Gounaris is being organized at the Badminton theater.

In the context of the section "The Faces of Greek Song" edited by Michalis Koubios, unforgettable hits of Nikos Gounaris will be performed by Kostas Makedonas and Babis Tsertos.

Songs like: "A night that rained", "Cairo", "We live for women", "Let's go to the bouzouki", "You make me write songs", "The hen the strumbula", "Stairs, my stairs", "That other one", "My sweet eyes dear", "For your absence" and many more have been sealed by his performances.

With them is Adriana Bambali, the P.M.T.P Company team of Sia Koskina and the hopeful Haris Makris. The songs will be performed by the diverse music orchestra of the Municipality of Athens. Θ. Angelopoulos: “He left” the poet of images

Στη μονάδα εντατικής θεραπείας του νοσοκομείου Metropolitan άφησε την τελευταία του πνοή o μεγάλος έλληνας σκηνοθέτης Θεόδωρος Αγγελόπουλος που τραυματίστηκε σε τροχαίο ατύχημα που συνέβη λίγο πριν τις 7 on Tuesday afternoon on the Drapetsona ring road. The director suffered severe brain injuries and the doctors were concerned about whether he should undergo surgery or not.
It is noted that in EKAV, an EDE is carried out in order to clarify the causes of the delay of the axle carrier, at the scene of the accident.
According to the first information, the director was at the scene for a film shoot and at the moment he was crossing the road he was run over by a private motorcycle driven by a special guard who was off duty and was slightly injured.
The investigation of the circumstances under which the accident occurred has been undertaken by the Korydallos Traffic Police, to which the special guard is going to give a statement. As reported by Traffic officers, the incident happened at a distance of approx 30 meters from the exit of the first tunnel on the road towards Keratsini in a dangerous, as they characterize the point, due to the frequency of road accidents that happen there. At the same time, the "microscope" will include the images from a closed-circuit camera located in the tunnel that may have recorded the scene of the accident
The government representative Mr. Pantelis Kapsis with the announcement of the death of the leading Greek director stated: "We all mourn for the great Greek who honored our homeland with his work".

When a director not only doesn't read but doesn't even count the books written about him and his work anymore, then it is at the top.
When on behalf of a film, έχει την δυνατότητα να κτίσει και μετά να γκρεμίσει ένα ολόκληρο χωριό _όπως έκανε με το «Λιβάδι που δακρύζει»_ τότε βρίσκεται στην κορυφή. Στην Γαλλία, για μια και μόνον ταινία του Θόδωρου Αγγελόπουλου, το «Ταξίδι στα Κύθηρα», έχει γραφεί 600 σελίδων (!) μελέτη για ντοκτορά η οποία στην συνέχεια εκδόθηκε στο εμπόριο.
Οι τίτλοι έναρξης της ταινίας του με τίτλο «Το λιβάδι που δακρύζει»
Στην Ιαπωνία έγινε πάταγος όταν οι ταινίες του κυκλοφόρησαν σε ειδική έκδοση DVD η οποία εκτός των άλλων περιείχε απαγγελία -από τις τρεις κόρες του- ποιημάτων που έχει γράψει ο ίδιος. Στην βιβλιογραφία που τον αφορά θα βρούμε ακόμα και βιβλία στα κινέζικα (!) ενώ όποτε ανακοίνωνε έστω και μια ιδέα για ταινία, τότε η ταινία αυτομάτως γινόταν γεγονός στον παγκόσμιο κινηματογραφικό χάρτη πολλά χρόνια πριν την ολοκλήρωσή της όπως ακριβώς συνέβη με την τελευταία του δημιουργία «Η άλλη θάλασσα» που δυστυχώς θα μείνει ανολοκλήρωτη.
Αυτό είναι το σημείο όπου εδώ και χρόνια βρισκόταν ο Θόδωρος Αγγελόπουλος που γεννήθηκε το 1936 στην Αθήνα και σπούδασε νομικά και κινηματογράφο στο Παρίσι. Αφού πέρασε από τον χώρο της κριτικής (εφημερίδα «Αλλαγή», περιοδικό «Σύγχρονος Κινηματογράφος») ο σημαντικότερος σύγχρονος πρεσβευτής του ελληνικού πολιτισμού στο εξωτερικό, είχε βραβευθεί με ό,τι σημαντικό υπάρχει στον χώρο του κινηματογράφου: Χρυσός Φοίνικας στο φεστιβάλ Κανών για το «Μια αιωνιότητα και μια ημέρα», μεγάλο βραβείο της επιτροπής για το «Βλέμμα του Οδυσσέα» στο ίδιο φεστιβάλ, Χρυσός Λέων για τον «Μεγαλέξανδρο» στο φεστιβάλ Βενετίας. Ο Αγγελόπουλος έφυγε αφήνοντας ένα τεράστιο κενό στον ελληνικό πολιτισμό. Τον πολιτισμό στον οποίο πίστευε, τον πολιτισμό για τον οποίο στεναχωριόταν τόσο πολύ και μέσα από την καρδιά του για την τωρινή κατάντια του.
«Ζούμε μια περίοδο που θα την ονόμαζα μοναδική, όχι με την καλή έννοια αλλά με την αρνητική της» είχε πει πέρσι, τέτοια εποχή στο Βήμα ο Αγγελόπουλος. «Έχω αρκετά χρόνια πίσω μου και τέτοιο πράγμα δεν το έχω ξαναζήσει. Ακόμα και στην περίοδο του Εμφυλίου, στην περίοδο της δικτατορίας ή και στην Κατοχή, ακόμα και τότε τα πράγματα είχαν μια δυναμική περίεργη, μια δυναμική υπόγεια, που δούλευε. Υπήρχε μια αντίσταση, υπήρχαν συγκρούσεις με ιδεολογικό περιεχόμενο, υπήρχε η αναζήτηση ενός καλύτερου κόσμου. Όταν είχαμε χούντα, πιστεύαμε ότι κάποια στιγμή θα τελειώσει και ότι τα πράγματα θα ανοίξουν. Πιστέψαμε σε αυτό που έμοιαζε ότι πάει να πάει να γίνει και ποτέ δεν έγινε».
Ο Θόδωρος Αγγελόπουλος κατόρθωσε να φθάσει σε αυτό το σημείο εξουσίας και αναγνώρισης, καλλιεργώντας υπομονετικά αλλά και πεισματικά την μοναδική αισθητική και γλώσσα του μέσα από μια σειρά ταινιών που αποτυπώνουν την εικόνα και την Ιστορία της Ελλάδας του. Της Ελλάδας μας. Μιας Ελλάδας που υπάρχει δίπλα μας αλλά που χωρίς τις ταινίες του Θόδωρου Αγγελόπουλου ίσως να μην γνωρίζαμε ποτέ. Της Ελλάδας στην «Αναπαράσταση», της Ελλάδας στον «Θίασο», της Ελλάδας στις «Μέρες του ’36», της Ελλάδας στον «Μεγαλέξανδρου», στον «Μελισσοκόμο» και στο «Βλέμμα του Οδυσσέα».

«Είμαι ένας άνθρωπος που ανήκει σε μια γενιά που έχει περάσει από συγκεκριμένες ιστορικές περιόδους με όλες τις έννοιες και με την απήχηση του ιστορικού παρόντος της εκάστοτε εποχής πάνω στην καθημερινότητα» είχε πει στο Βήμα ο Θόδωρος Αγγελόπουλος. «Θεωρώ ότι δεν μπορείς να μένεις εκτός και αυτή είναι η ουσιώδης διαφορά της δικής μου γενιάς κινηματογραφιστών με την σημερινή».
