JOHN CARTER: BETWEEN TWO WORLDS

The preservation of the ancient theater of Dodoni is a puzzle that is looking for a solution

Puzzle, which, however, must be solved, the preservation of the ancient theater of Dodoni remains despite years of efforts by the competent services of the Ministry of Culture and by experts to reverse the tragic situation in which it has fallen.

The reason is "natural" and has to do with the friable stone from which it was made and which turns into, at a fast pace now, in gravel.

The restoration of the first seven rows of seats was therefore seen by the members of the Central Archaeological Council a few weeks ago in an autopsy that took place in Dodoni and although they agreed that the work is being carried out in the right way, they couldn't help but point out, for one more time, that time is not on our side. Because wear and tear "runs" faster than any operations.

The authenticity of the material used in the restoration but also the authenticity of the form of the monument are also fundamental issues.

Artificial stone will therefore continue to be used at the lower level of the sockets to ensure their fixation, while natural stone will be placed on the upper surface for the best image of the monument.

Even after all the restoration is over though, which will take a long time to happen, the theater will not be usable. Because even if someone steps on or sits on a bench, the stone will be in danger of breaking.

The foreign verse is… Greek!

Homegrown bands with English-language lyrics look to the future

Three interesting Greek English-speaking bands that have a present and especially a future appear in the coming days in Athens in two clubs to present their works.

The sound of Electric Litany can, Tango With Lions and Vokomolech may be different but this proves that young Greek artists have different hiring, different influences and mainly musical vision. There aren't many who disagree about the English verse. However, this does not mean that there are no worthy proposals that need our support.

Electric Litany with opening act Tango With Lions appear on Thursday 15 Of March, at the Gagarin club 205. Two different bands from two different countries will unite two diverse music scenes. The lo-fi culture of abandoned buildings, of the unpretentious emotions and dynamic robotic rhythms of Electric Litany will meet the acoustic folk collective of Katerina Papachristou and Tango with Lions in a live that, if nothing else, it will not lack atmosphere.

Electric Litany

After record silence 2 years, and approx 8 months after their last appearance here with Interpol, Electric Litany return to Athens to give us a first taste of their upcoming second studio album. The single "Enemy", released by Inner Ear, seeks the perfect balance between personal/social revolution and romance/love.

Tango With Lions

The intro to this quirky universe is taken on a more minimalistic note, the changing musical collective of Tango with Lions formed the 2007 from Kat (K. Papachristou), known for her collaborations with many bands of the English-speaking indie/alternative scene. With the soundtrack of her diaries and influenced by current affairs, from books, from her favorite movies and music, recorded with Ottomo at Fab Liquid Studios her first album called 'Tango with Lions', mainly in an acoustic style, with an American folk mood and a correspondingly introverted lyrical microcosm, in which Kat's special voice guides us in every corner, through the atmosphere of her songs.

* The doors open at 21:00. Inception: 21:45. Ticket price: 12 euro. Special pre-sale price: 10 euro (for the first ones 100 tickets).

Next Friday (16 Of March) Bokomolech appear at the Fuzz club with guests False Alarm with Scott McCloud.

The Bokomolech are here again! The Greek band will be on the Fuzz stage, presenting songs from his nearly twenty year career as well as the brand new album, «Mass Vulture», which marks their return to the discography after approx 9 years.

Special guest of the evening, ο Scott McCloud, front man of the legendary Girls Against Boys! Along with False Alarm, one of the most interesting new bands on the domestic scene, will present some tracks from the GVSB era, as well as new material.

Bokomolech

One of the best known and best groups of the Athenian scene, the Bokomolech (a name that is a portmanteau of that Ukrainian physiologist Oleksandr Bogomoletz, who, in the 40s, composed an elixir to prolong life to 140 years) they have seven to their credit, along with the upcoming one, releases.

Their debut, «Xero» (1995), is a milestone for the domestic Rock'n'Roll discography. Such was the sensation it caused, so that on two of their next releases Bokomolech found themselves collaborating with Steve Albini (Big Black, Shellac), one of the most iconic personalities of the American underground scene, who became best known as the producer on Nirvana's 'In Utero'.

After a slow but persistent process, the Bokomolech ended up choosing the 10 of tracks included on 'Mass Vulture', their brand new album released by Inner Ear. The Bokomolech are the: Dimitris Ioannou (voice), Vlasis Karagiannis (drums), Christina Kassesian (guitar), Lila Katerinaki (bass), Tasos Protopapas (keyboards / loupes), Kostas Ragousis (guitar).

Scott McCloud

Scott Mc Cloud is the lead singer and mastermind of Girls Against Boys, one of the most well-known and at the same time quality bands of the American scene of the 90's.

Very beloved by the Greek public, McCloud has visited our country several times in the past, both with his band and as a solo artist. With Girls Against Boys they laid the foundations for the formation of today's post-punk / dance audio. On Friday night, False Alarm will accompany him on vocals.

The latter resumed it 2010 (after a short try the 1998) and consist of S.Pyros D (drums / member of Rockin’ Bones), Kostas Oikonomou (bass), Konstantinos Kopanakis (guitar), Nikos Kopanakis (guitar) and Nikos Baltzois (voice).

Thessaloniki Documentary Festival: People in the trash

Photo exhibition highlights the enormous problem of slums

Five characteristic slums of the world, in Dhaka, in Karachi, in Johannesburg, in Port-au-Prince and Nairobi, form the backdrop of a major photography exhibition signed by an equal number of award-winning photographers from the Noor agency.

This time the exhibition is being held in Thessaloniki as part of the 14th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.

THE Stanley Green, or Alexandra Fagina, The Francesco Zizzola, The Jon Lowenstein and the Pep Bonnet they are the protagonists of the photos behind the lens, while the faces of hundreds of anonymous destitute and homeless "decorate" the content of the exhibition entitled "Urban Survivors – Surviving in the slums of the world» and is housed in the Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki in Warehouse B1, in the Port of the city.

Nowadays, more than one in ten people on the planet lives in a slum. With the aim of raising awareness and informing the public about the specific issue, the exhibition reveals the harsh daily life of these populations, who are either evicted or forced to move from their homes.
Not by chance, the idea for the exhibition (as well as its title) arose out of MSF's 'Urban Survivors' project and was produced in collaboration with Noor Photography and Darjeeling Productions.

"The exhibition ”Urban Survivors – Surviving in the slums of the world” brings to the surface a problem that is now outside our door" said the curator of the exhibition Mr. Thanos Stavropoulos, while on her part, Mrs. Melina Spathari of the organization Doctors Without Borders stated among other things that "through this specific exhibition we communicate to the people who support us the phenomenon of urbanization, which we are no longer allowed to treat as the ”invisible elephant in the room”. Next to Dhaka, Port-au-Prince and Karachi, we added Athens to our scope of action. THE,what happens in Haiti has an impact here too, the phenomenon is the same: people who are faced with the insecurity of shelter and their very livelihood. If until yesterday these situations were similar to us ”exotic”, today we cannot say that they are unknown to us".

Duration: 11 -18 Of March 2012, operating hours: daily from 12:00 until 20:00

Domna Samiou died

The most important performer and researcher of Greek traditional music

Domna Samiou is the most important performer and researcher of Greek traditional music, died Saturday night, after recent health problems. He dedicated and devoted himself to the propagation of traditional music and traditional song, since she actually served it since she was 13 years old. He will be buried on Tuesday, at 3 afternoon, from the cemetery of Nea Smyrni.

But let's see how Domna Samiou herself, she describes this relationship she had with music on her website : “My ear to me ever since, like a kid I was, he got all the sounds and musics. My father sang very well, the man was not a singer, but he chanted and sang very well too. I remember when he would come home from work he would take me on his knees and cuddle me and say, let's say, Hurry, where are you going, baby?, in the cheese maker, and we didn't find any cheese, we saw the shepherd… or other miscellaneous, let's say, The child wants to dance, the violins are not here, and whoever goes to bring them, a thaler in hand…

The church of Agios Nikolaos was also nearby and every Sunday I went with my father and attended the service, of course not out of religiousness but because I liked this music, it was like going to a concert, let's say. Little by little I had learned the whole operation by heart, the Holy Week services, the Greetings, I remember that I had also learned "Aspile, undefiled..”, which they say at the end of the Greetings, where a little child is standing in front of Christ and another in front of the Virgin Mary, I recited this whole piece by heart".

Curriculum vitae

Domna Samiou was born on 12 October 1928 in Kaisariani, Athens.

Her parents were Asia Minor refugees from Baydiri, village of Smyrna region. Her mother came to Greece in 1922, her father, captured soldier, a little later, with the Exchange. In the environment of Kaisarianni, she had her first musical hearings, from which her love for traditional music began..

At the age 13 years old, Domna Samiou has her first teaching contact with Byzantine and folk music, but also with the logic of field research, apprenticed under Simon Karas, in the "Association for the Promotion of National Music", while at the same time attending the night high school.

As a member of the choir of Simon Karas, she began her relationship with the National Radio Foundation/E.I.R. where later, the 1954, is hired at the Department of National Music. From this position he knows the most important popular musicians, who at that time of internal migration flocked to Athens from all regions of Greece, and whom TEM records for its broadcasts.

At the same time, he edits music for record releases, theatrical shows, motion pictures. The 1963 begins her trips to the countryside for field recordings and gathering of musical material for her personal archive with her own equipment.

The 1971 resigns from the Radio. In the same year, he accepted the invitation of Dionysos Savvopoulos and appeared for the first time in the youth club Rodeo, giving a great turn since then to the relationship of young people with traditional music.

These important appearances are followed by participation in the Bach Festival in London, organized by Lila Lalanti. The brilliant artistic career of Domna Samiou has begun triumphantly. "The shame they had about the folk song is over", as she states in an interview herself.

The 1974 co-operation with Columbia and consecutive LP releases begin. The 1976-77 with directors Fotos Lambrinos and Andreas Thomopoulos, they shoot twenty episodes in the Greek countryside for the ERT show "Musical Journey".

The 1981 the Municipal Music Artistic Association is founded – Domna Samiou with the aim of saving and promoting traditional music and mainly publishing records and organizing events with strict scientific and quality standards, away from the demands of commercial companies.

Her work now goes beyond the Greek borders. Her records are published in France and Sweden. For about forty years he has been performing a series of concerts from Australia to South America that not only move the Greeks of the Diaspora but also reveal to foreigners a quality "Greek music without bouzouki", as written in some review of her concert in Sweden.

Inside Greece, her appearances at concerts of all kinds and for every occasion are countless, as well as the honorary invitations and tributes, such as e.g. the anniversary show for the 70 her years: "Domna Samiou at the Concert Hall: the known and unknown Domna", in October 1998.

For her various activities she collaborates with the most renowned Greek and foreign musicians, musicologists, folklorists, ethnomusicologists but also teaches, introduces and highlights emerging young artists.

From the 1994 gives folk song lessons for adults at the Museum of Greek Folk Instruments in Athens. Her initiatives are also numerous and her practical and selfless offer regarding the improvement of children's music education in primary education, pedagogically primary and imperative request according to her.

Acclaimed and loved for her contribution and presence, she saw her work recognized multiple times and was honored with many awards, culminating in the awarding of a medal by the President of the Republic K. Stefanopoulos 2005.
