The Museum Byzantine Culture hosts the exhibition Reason VI: The telegram, with works by collection of OTE Telecommunications Museum - Donation Michalis Tsipidis / Photographic mission of Spyros Staveris.

The exhibition is held on the occasion of the donation of the original collection (vintage) telegrams of Michalis Tsipidis at the Telecommunications Museum of OTE.

They are presented approx 70 original telegrams, mainly of a commercial nature, from the different telegraph services based in Thessaloniki from 1870 until the 1956 (the Ottoman Imperial Telegraph Service, the Bulgarian, the Serbian, the English Eastern Telegraph Company and its evolution, η Cable and Wireless, the English Cable Telegraph Company, the Hellenic Postal Telegraphic Telephone Service and OTE).

The visitor thus watches a part of the history of Thessaloniki unfold through a few words, from transactions, even from the censored telegrams.

These are interlaced with photographs of today by Spyros Staveris, by commission from the Museum of Photography of Thessaloniki. The images are based on selected telegram messages from the photographer, thus bringing words and image into dialogue: words of the past fuel images of today, always having the same setting, the city of Thessaloniki.

The present collection of Michalis Tsipidis includes more than 300 original telegrams and the 2012 donated to the OTE Telecommunications Museum.

The report also includes a film of short length (5.30’’) with an interview of the collector Michalis Tsipidis. Additional, four items are presented (telegraph table control, milliammeter, telegraph table dialer, table electromagnet) from the permanent collection of the OTE Telecommunications Museum.

THE TELEGRAPH SERVICES OF THESSALONIKI

Ottoman Imperial Telegraph Service 1870-1912

A telegraph service operated in Thessaloniki probably for the first time in the middle of the decade 1870. It was part of the Imperial State Service of Posts and Telegraphs and was housed in the same building as the post office on Egnatias Street at the corner of Syngrou. At the beginning of the 20th century the office was open 24 hours a day, he received and sent telegrams in both Arabic and Western languages. The Ottoman telegraph office was closed at the end of October 1912.

English Cable Telegraph Company 1880-1912

An office of the Cable Telegraph Company operated in Thessaloniki during the Ottoman Empire (at least from 1885). The office ceased operations on 1912. Fees for sending telegrams over Cable's wires were always more expensive than those of the Ottoman Telegraph Service.

English Telegraph Company Eastern Telegraph Company Limited 1912-1937

The 1878 the English company Eastern Telegraph Company expanded its activities in Greece, entering into a long-term contract with the Greek government, which ended the 1916. Finally, due to the First World War and after new negotiations, the contract was extended and finally ended 1956. The 1927 η εν λόγω εταιρεία συγχωνεύθηκε με την τηλεγραφική εταιρεία Marconi Radio Telegraph Co.

Στη Θεσσαλονίκη λειτούργησε γραφείο της εταιρείας μετά την απελευθέρωση της πόλης το 1912 and up to 1937 οπότε η εταιρεία μετονομάσθηκε σε Cable and Wireless Limited.

English Telegraph Company Cable and Wireless Limited 1937-1956

Η εταιρεία Cable and Wireless Limited προήλθε από μετονομασία της Eastern Telegraph Company το 1937. The 1956 η εν λόγω εταιρεία συγχωνεύθηκε στον Οργανισμό Τηλεπικοινωνιών Ελλάδος (OTE) which had been founded the 1949.

Bulgarian Telegraph Service 1912-1913

Κατά το διάστημα της σύντομης παρουσίας βουλγαρικού στρατού στη Θεσσαλονίκη από 9 November 1912 until 16 Ιουνίου λειτούργησε στην πόλη βουλγαρικό τηλεγραφικό γραφείο. Στεγαζόταν στο ισόγειο ενός επιταχθέντος βουλγαρικού ξενοδοχείου το οποίο βρισκόταν κοντά στη συνοικία του Βαρδαρίου. THE transmission messages to and from Bulgaria and the other Bulgarian-occupied areas were sent through Serres.

Hellenic Postal Service, Telegraph and Telephone service (T.T.T.) 1912-1949

The 1896 three services were united the Postal Service, η Τηλεγραφική και η Τηλεφωνική σε μία με την ονομασία Τ.Τ.Τ. Η υπηρεσία αυτή λειτούργησε στη Θεσσαλονίκη αμέσως μετά την απελευθέρωση της πόλης το 1912 and up to 1949 which was founded by Organization of Telecommunications of Greece. Το ελληνικό ταχυδρομείο και τηλεγραφείο στη Θεσσαλονίκη λειτούργησε αρχικά στο αντίστοιχο οθωμανικό οίκημα επί της Εγνατίας οδού, το οποίο κατελήφθη από την ελληνική χωροφυλακή το πρωί της 27ης Οκτωβρίου 1912. At the end of March 1913 και οι δύο υπηρεσίες μεταφέρθηκαν σε νεόκτιστο κτήριο που βρισκόταν στην οδό Μεγάλου Αλεξάνδρου (today's Katuni street) near the beach. Η κατασκευή αυτού του κτηρίου είχε ήδη τελειώσει επί Οθωμανικής Διοικήσεως και όταν η πόλη καταλήφθηκε από τον ελληνικό στρατό, έγινε η εγκατάσταση των μηχανών του τηλεγραφείου.

Telecommunications Organization of Greece (OTE) 1949-

Ο Οργανισμός Τηλεπικοινωνιών Ελλάδος (OTE) ιδρύθηκε με το νομοθετικό διάταγμα 1049 her 1 September 1949 και λειτούργησε ως ανώνυμη εταιρεία με μοναδικό μέτοχο το Κράτος. Σ’ αυτόν αργότερα συγχωνεύθηκαν όλες οι προϋπάρχουσες υπηρεσίες επικοινωνίας, όπως αυτές της τηλεφωνίας και τηλεγραφίας των Τ.Τ.Τ. and 1956 η εταιρεία Cable and Wireless Company.
