KTM presented the "E-Speed", a new zero-emissions electric scooter, at the Tokyo Motor Show. It was also designed by Gerald Kiska's studio, who is responsible for the appearance of all KTMs here and 20 years.
Based on the technology that powers the Freeride E dirt play bike, the E-Speed prototype brings the Austrian company within striking distance of the urban commuter market, i.e. the two-tracks intended exclusively for limited urban movements, when and if it blooms.
Positioning the impressive scooter as a sporty two-wheeler, KTM states that its engine produces almost 15PS, when that of the Freeride E did not surpass them 10. Also the lithium ion battery now has capacity 4,36 kWh, when in Freeride he had barely 2,1. The maximum torque is stated in 3,6 kg.
The upgraded performance of the liquid-cooled "modern" electric motor gives the E-Speed ultimate 80 km per hour via belt final drive.
The battery is fully charged in 2 hours from a household power outlet.
As for its more "conventional" features, the scooter uses a lattice frame and premium suspension from WP, with which the Austrian company has been working closely since the 90s and shortly after joined its fleet.
KTM CEO Stefan Pierer stated: "We at KTM are absolutely convinced of electric propulsion, as the perfect complement to conventional drive systems. In the long term, electric motors will prevail in the use of limited routes and especially where environmental protection will be the regulatory factor, as in nature or in densely populated metropolises".
“Vehicles like the E-Speed and Freeride E can help two-wheelers, increasing their acceptance by society. Not only thanks to their environmentally friendly features, but also because they offer ease of use, time saving and fun".
However, it appears that Pierer's "faith" in electric two-wheelers is a fluctuating quantity. A few weeks ago, speaking to the Italian Motociclismo he had stated that he does not see much future in electric two-wheelers, not at least as long as current battery technology is used, which he described as "very dangerous (means lithium ion) and expensive, with low efficiency and very long recharging time".
If these negatives are not changed through technological development, he said it is not worth dealing with electric two-wheelers, completed, effectively announcing that the "Freeride E Design" has been shelved.
