Carmen Souza live at the Half Note Jazz Club

Half Note Jazz Club presents The Great Carmen Souza, a now recognized presence on the world stage, from Wednesday
15 February and for 5 total appearances.

Carmen Souza from Cape Verde, is undeniably a distinct musical presence placed artistically at the "meeting" point of the traditional music of Cabo Verde and world Jazz. Raised in a Creole environment, discovered "Sodade" from a very young age, of the feeling of anticipation and nostalgia for someone or something missing that generations of sailor children carry within them, like her! She started singing in a Gospel choir at a young age and was influenced by musicians such as Luis Morais but also Nina Simone or Billie Holiday.

Portugal's leading bass player Theo Pas'cal, Carmen's producer and mentor who discovered her exuberant talent, it pushed her to listen a lot to the top jazz of Bill Evans, of Hancock, of Miles or Horace Silver and this will play a role in her musical career. Her first record work the 2005 was a huge success, with very interesting material in Creole dialect where the traditional rhythms of Cabo Verde and the mornas, are combined with modern jazz forms and give a completely different dimension to the music of Akrotiri. In the same year, adored by the international press, it will be played at the famous Womad Festival in England and then at all the Festivals in the world. Two more very successful records followed, "Verdade" and "Protegid" which will also be nominated for best world music album 2010.

Souza is now a great voice and force in world music, who has a huge appeal and demand in all the jazz scenes of the world and comes with her quartet to excite us too…
