Battery : How it works

The battery is a store of electrical energy. This electrical energy is stored in chemical form and converted back into electricity, every time the battery is used.
The batteries used in motorcycles are of two types: conventional lead type or "dry" MF type, which do not need maintenance. The differences between them are less than one might think at first glance, as we will see below.

Motorcycle batteries are rechargeable and have low external resistance, so that there is the possibility of high current supply, without significant potential drop. Each battery consists of a series of cells 2 Volt. That is, a 12 volt battery consists of 6 such elements and, respectively, a 6 volt from 3. Each element consists of two groups of lead plates, immersed in the electrolytic medium, which is sulfuric acid diluted in water. Each group of lead plates is connected to a pole of the battery.

When the electrolytic medium is at rest, consists of positively and negatively charged particles, which in total give zero charge, i.e. neutral state. Emotions are the language that the body uses to communicate its needs, Nevertheless, apply voltage to both poles (battery charging), then the positive particles move towards the lead plates attached to the negatively charged pole and charge it positively. Negatively charged particles do the same with the other pole. So, when the battery is finished charging, we have two charged poles, one positive and one negative. When these two poles are connected to an external circuit, then the positively charged particles begin to move through the circuit towards the negative pole, resulting in the creation of an electric current in the circuit, but also battery discharge. So recharging the battery is necessary, which is done by the motorcycle's generator, when it is in operation.

Each cell is isolated from the rest and has its own reservoir of electrolyte. For this, each cell has its own cap on the battery case. On MF batteries, between the plates of each element is spongy material, which absorbs the electrolytic medium. Because during the continuous charging of the battery during the operation of the motorcycle, gases are expelled from the electrolytic medium, but the volume of the electrolyte itself also fluctuates, there is a need for venting. So, in conventional batteries there is free space above the cells, which communicates with a vent tube. MF batteries do not have a tube, but a non-return gas escape valve, for the case of high internal pressure, which excludes leaks.

The cost of buying a battery is significant and let's not forget that the battery is a key structural element in the electrical circuit of a motorcycle. The least we can do is proper maintenance. Checking the electrolyte level in conventional batteries is important, because a smaller quantity than normal, except that it reduces the amount of particles, with effect, leaves the lead plates exposed and unprotected from oxidation. No matter if the battery is conventional or MF, a preemptive charge on each service can save a lot of trouble. And we must not forget that the battery must be clean of dirt. A little vaseline or grease on the poles, but after they are first connected to the circuit, protects against oxidation and the appearance of scales that can interrupt the flow of current.

Rubber for… spectacle!

THE Bridgestone tested the new rear tire structure at the Jerez test and it looks like it, tail slips will be a frequent occurrence for the 2012.
The new Bridgestone tires also tested at Jerez seemed to resonate well with most riders, however Casey Stoner was against it, since he preferred the harder structure.

The new tires offer quick warm-up, while many were the ones who were in a hurry saying that accordingly the wear and tear would be very fast. But Bridgestone denied them, after all the wear was not what was expected and that the tire holds up without losing its grip. The rear tire, despite the soft structure, it slips, but this is mainly due to the increase in displacement of the engines. But something like this will worry many fans of the sport, who are waiting endlessly to watch the spectacle.

Riding a foreign or new motorcycle

In several cases you may have the opportunity (or be forced) ride a foreign or new motorcycle. In this case, you need to exercise increased vigilance and caution.

The most basic thing to try from the very first steps, it's the brakes. Play with the levers a bit and compare: are stronger than yours, they are softer to the touch; The conclusions will be life saving when you need to brake.

There are plenty of times when you have the opportunity or are forced to drive something else: when you go for a ride with a friend and switch bikes halfway through, when driving a rental car, when you test ride but also when you buy a new model or leave yours for service and get a replacement from the workshop.

The care you have to show in these cases is great. The new or foreign model has its own quirks and should not be treated with the logic that “nothing is wrong, I have been riding motorcycles for many years". Each model is unique and should be treated as such.

So read the main points that you should pay attention to when riding an unfamiliar motorcycle.

1. The first thing you must do when you get in the saddle, is to adjust the mirrors to your measurements.

2. Press both feet firmly on the ground and rock the motorcycle left and right, to calculate its weight. Especially if it is a heavier model than yours, repeat the process until you get used to it.

3. Getting started, pay attention to the clutch. It's definitely not set to the same standards as yours. Start slowly keeping in mind the disengagement point, so you can change relationship faster.

4. In the event that the model you own has ABS and the one you are driving for the first time does not, brake hard sometimes, so you get used to the fact that at the end of the lever travel, the brakes may lock.

5. If you are making the transition from a small displacement bike to a large one, don't force it until you get used to it. Even if you've been driving an R1 for the last few years, forced to duck ride for a few days and back to R1 again, a short adjustment period is necessary before you "drink" his blood again.

6. If the motorcycle you are going to ride has electronic systems that can be adjusted on the fly (B.C. ignition maps, electronically adjustable suspensions, etc.), spend a few minutes on them before you start, so they don't distract you while driving.

7. In case you change from a scooter to a motorcycle or vice versa, we never forget the following: scooters rely more on the rear brake, while the motorcycles in the front.

8. Always bear in mind that in many cases the new or foreign model you will be called upon to drive, it won't react the same way yours does. Don't forget that you're not driving the model you're used to, and you probably know it inside out, but a foreign and unpredictable one.

Piaggio Beverly 300: More complete than ever

It has proven to be dominant in sales and not by accident. This is Beverly 300 of 22 horses, which with the incomparable style, and the most complete character, wins the bet!
In our country, politics has been engulfed by firebrands who have been in power for decades and, as it seems, the results of this tactic are not the best. In the Greek reality, Nevertheless, there is another powerful family, which for many years has been at the top of scooters and the benefits for those who have voted for it are enormous. Her name is Beverly.

And the new Beverly 300 is the latest offspring of the said family. The Italian scooter was lucky to be born with a name that would guarantee it (and indeed it happened) the title of best seller in its category. However, the road ahead, he is not one to cash in on the fame his name affords him, but that of hard work. Besides, in the competitive times we live in, only this would ensure his success. The new Beverly 300, Well, it makes the most of not just the name, but also those elements that brought his ancestors to the top. Alongside, also brings new features to what years from now we will know as the "collective DNA of the Beverly family". In a few words, the designers of the new scooter did not start from a blank sheet of paper - they kept the best elements of the models and versions of the last years: their engine 278 ml, the sturdy frame, the ergonomics and comfort it offers. And some of them strengthened them, so as to become new points of reference: the brakes, the spaces, the behavior, the elegant and fresh aesthetic. The result is the new Beverly 300, a scooter reinforced at points, able to become a best seller and rule the scooters not only because of its name, but also the new features that make it even better.

Aesthetics:Transformation here and now
The new Beverly seems to have borrowed characteristic elements from previous models and versions, in order to modernize them and, at the very first glance, you understand that he has succeeded. Starting with the mask, you see the characteristic lines of a Beverly and the large headlight on the steering wheel, but with the differences being strong. The grille lines and side LEDs are sharper than before, while the projector more square. The design of the apron is equally aggressive, at the top of which the bicolor in the plastics stands out. Additional, in the central tunnel is the gas cap, which is now aircraft type. In line, the evolution of the aesthetic elements of previous Beverlys continues unabated, thanks to the corners of the plastics, but also the new lamp (also LEDs) body. New elements in the aesthetics of the Beverly are the impressive rims, but also the renewed instrument panel.

Motor : Successful tenure
Their motor 278 κ.εκ. it is the only part of the new Beverly that has not been tampered with in the slightest. The Italians correctly judged that the issue of 300 κ.εκ. it needed no improvements in this area (that of 125 κ.εκ. it's another story) and the engine unit called Quasar works its magic here as well. Linear over its entire operating range, which means that it will satisfy with the above even at low revs. -point where the engine of 250 κ.εκ. it was not proper- the motor is the first to set the tone for the character of the new Beverly. Its increased torque (always compared to their Quasar 244 ml) it makes it more matchy, especially at startups, while the vibrancy is not going to be missing from Beverly, until it reaches its final end.

Spaces / Comfort: You'll... be comfortable
After this update, the beverly now belongs to the scooter sub-category 300 κ.εκ. that can accommodate a full face or two jet helmets under their saddle. The space below it is larger, while the help from the... regional areas remains important. The glove compartment of the apron will fit several small things, while the folding hook will take care of carrying a bag. End, the grill remains useful, as it can increase the transport capabilities of the scooter. The saddle of the new Beverly also appears renewed and better. Her new foam material and redesign have increased her, even discreetly, comfort levels. Complaints will not be heard even from the passenger, to which a large part of it is attributed. The only complaint will come at high speeds, when zero wind protection will annoy rider and passenger.

Posts: Modest and humble
Maybe the new Beverly's suspension system was designed from scratch, however, its operation and the general philosophy that characterizes it, is the same. Ahead we meet a fork 35 mm. and rear dual shock absorbers with adjustable preload. The feeling they will give the rider, if he has driven one of the previous Beverlys, it is a little more robust, a positive element for the more sporty moods of the model. And in the field of feeling, the posts are satisfying, while the only complaint will come on really bad road surfaces, where the rider will feel some bumps in his waist.

Brakes: Brake on uncertainty
In addition to improved performance in the area of brakes, Beverly also boasts a record: the largest disk in its class, with diameter 300 mm. Naturally, the new disc isn't just there to impress with its size. Combined with the also new trumpet of 12 thousand, the main characteristics of a brake, the power and the feeling, have received a small, except important, improvement. After the specific improvements, Beverly's braking process looks like a short one, but especially worked song. Pressing, for example, the rear brake lever, the intro of the song comes on, the near-empty lever stroke that characterizes all Beverlys. Gradually, the guitar starts, in a linear manner, without frightening with its intensity. As the song comes to a close, the feeling it gives you, it totally puts you in the groove. His end will come quite naturally, without leaving you to complain about the brevity and intensity of the voice.

Driving: It lives up to its title
The feeling you get in the saddle of the new Beverly is familiar and at the same time so new that it can confuse you, if you have driven Beverly before. Your vision is what will confuse you first, since you see that you are on a different scooter, though everything in his behavior seems familiar. Acquaintance, but not exactly the same. The engine may not hold any surprises, if you know him, however, the general behavior of the scooter is clearly improved. Let's get started, Well, from the known. By opening the throttle, the beverly will power boot, but without scaring his rider. Already from the low rev range, its function is full and the good impressions will continue as the kilometers on the odometer go up, as the power comes in plenty and in a sweet way. Inside the city, the beverly will do just fine. The feeling it offers to the rider is airy and at the same time sturdy. Its volume, on the other, is up to the standards of the class and the Italian scooter will find some obstacles in its way. Out of town, Beverly will remain stable, even close to his final. The 135 km/h which will be the final reading on its counter, they are satisfactory for short trips, but lack of gel will tire the rider.

Conclusion: Bitten
The renewed Beverly is now the new king of scooters, something that happened almost from the first moment that the Italian scooter came to the Greek market. His name and the success of every Beverly that came before it, they helped it in its successful course from the first moment, although the new 300ari was not based only on them. The changes to which the Italian best seller underwent, they improved it in key areas, such as spaces, handling and brakes. Additional, its new aesthetic is not only fresh and modern, but also ready to inspire the next generations of scooters.

Bimota «XXX»: The beginning of a new era;

This is how he imagines the future models of the Italian company, the well-known designer Oberdan Bezzi, who has clearly been influenced by American culture.

The design called Bimota XXX could even be sacrilege for a large share of the European public who have associated the Italian company in their minds with expensive and exotic sports motorcycles.
On the other, Nevertheless, for the American public, creating an Italian muscle bike might have made sense, since it combines American and Italian elements in appearance, top regionals and an exotic name in the tank. Ducati led the way with the Diavel, why not Bimota with a similar proposal...

The center of attention is of course the S's big V-2 engine&S, with Brembo and Ohlins underwriting the brakes and suspension, respectively. The more one looks at it anyway, the more attractive the idea of its implementation becomes.

Rambla derby 300: Small urban fireball

With a powerful engine, affordable price, very good performance but also top flexibility, the Rambla scooter by Derbi moves around town like no other!
Someone talked about flexibility; Because if someone intended to do it, it is good that he waits his turn, as the Rambla 300 has the first and last word on the matter, thanks to its small dimensions, its spark and mid-rpm engine performance. Ah, those middle turns…

Forgive me if I dwell on the Rambla's mid-range performance, but it was my favorite part of it. I will try, Nevertheless, to give the necessary weight to his other positives as well (and of course also in its negatives), as did the Derbi officials, who did not leave any of the characteristics of the Rambla to chance. Sure, the engine change is the only difference between the Rambla 300 and the previous version of 250 ml, however, the Spaniards probably did not consider some other changes to the scooter necessary.

Aesthetics: He remains aggressive
The Spanish did not change anything in the aesthetics of the Rambla, as it was not deemed necessary to strengthen the -anyway- sport philosophy that its appearance declares. Its plastics are full of corners and its grille is the sharpest part on the scooter. The mask, as in the previous model, acquires doses of malice, thanks to the aggressive headlights and grilles on the top, while the plastics around the steering wheel seem to be a natural continuation of the small black jelly. Corners are plentiful at the back of the scooter as well. In the queue there is also the only non-sport visible element of the Rambla, the small grill, while the aggressive design is completed by the double rear light. End, the red seams of the saddle also contribute to the aesthetic philosophy of the Derbi, the digital instrument panel with the white analog speedometer and one of the most beautiful logos in the class. Spaces / Comfort: It has some of those too! Despite its sporty character, which was boosted with the new engine, as well as its small dimensions, the Rambla is not going to disappoint in these areas. Sure, don't expect an armchair driving position and huge spaces - the Rambla delivers, but he doesn't study well. It cannot be otherwise, after all. Above all, it is a petite and versatile scooter. The driving position, Well, she is comfortable, although narrow and gives an upright posture to the body. The rider can also bring his body into a more aggressive position, while the space for the legs will not be a problem. Nothing more than a jet helmet will fit under the saddle. Small things can be placed in the glove compartment of the apron and bags on the special hook. End, an extra top case will easily fit on the rack.

Frame / Posts Related to sport movement
The frame and suspension are the two elements of the Rambla that are most responsible for its good sporting behavior, after the engine. The double tubular frame is made of aluminum and is particularly rigid, which will be especially appreciated when the Rambla is on an incline. Posts follow the same philosophy. The front fork of the 35 mm. it won't complain under lean or hard braking, while the double shock absorber at the back provides rigidity and will not complain easily. However, this stiffness also translates into... harsh behavior of the scooter when faced with potholes and bad road surface.

Brakes: Immediately
Rambla's braking system 300 consists of two disks 260 mm. on the front wheel and one 220 mm. in the back. Brake action is immediate and power is felt every time the rider squeezes the lever. However, their immediacy and the power that characterizes them, caused frequent wheel lockups in our test model. Anyway, at this point it should be clarified that this particular model was unblasted, which means that brake performance but -mainly- and tires, expected to improve, reducing said blockages.

Motor: Transformation!
For one more time, Piaggio's Quasar disproved those who believed it showed the, what was there to show. Taking a light and agile scooter and putting an engine with increased torque levels and smooth operation, the Derbi engineers gave the Rambla not only a new lease of life, but a current capable of sweeping away everything in its path. The operation of the engine will give you a rough idea of its moods, but when the revs reach the low-mid operating range, will start a... urban party that hardly exists like it! Throttle responses are immediate, the torque is satisfying and the behavior of the Derbi is able to convince even the most skeptical of its capabilities. The good image will continue even at high revs, although at high speeds it will remind you that it is simply a single cylinder 300. Driving: It doesn't spoil for you! The new Rambla will initially tempt you with its light weight and compact dimensions that allow it to fit everywhere. On the way, Nevertheless, it will blow your mind with the engine performance at low and medium revs. Thanks to her, it will move in sport rhythms and will impress with its flexibility. Moreover, setting up the scooter serves the same purpose, i.e. sports behavior, and this is made evident by the fact that the Rambla will not spoil you but a few favors along the way. You want explosive starts; Open the gas and few will be able to follow you at the traffic lights. You want big slopes; Turn, move into the saddle and you'll realize that suspension and frame limits will be slow to come (those of the tires will probably come first). You want security and immediate immobilizations; Here it will spoil it for you a little, due to some unwanted blocks, although the overall image of the brakes is considered satisfactory. Naturally, the Rambla will also do you some practical favors, but not all. It will move comfortably between cars, he'll turn his steer a lot when maneuvering and won't tire you easily in his saddle. On the other, Nevertheless, it will not be able to carry many things, it will beat its suspension on bad road surface and will not protect you enough from the wind at high speeds.

Conclusion: Lots of positives
Small dimensions and low weight are the first positive elements of the Rambla 300. And coupled with its engine and chassis and suspension performance, the above features give another advantage to the Spanish scooter: flexibility and sport behavior. We can add more positive elements to this list (youthful appearance and big wheels), as well as negatives (poor tire performance, small spaces). Closing, another element that plays a particularly important role is its price, which, στα 3.775 euro, is the lowest in the category.
