Mark Lanegan returns to Greece

In Athens and Thessaloniki in April

The leading singer of modern Rock'n'Roll, Μark Lanegan, will be located in Athens, along with his band, on Thursday 5 April (Fuzz Live Music Club) for a unique evening full of the magic of a rare and wonderful voice, melancholic and sometimes dark, his music. One day earlier, on Wednesday 4 April, will perform at the Principal Club Theater, in Thessaloniki.

Voice of the legendary Screaming Trees – perhaps the best and, with no doubt, now overlooked band that sprung from the whole grunge stream – Mark Lanegan is, here and 25 (and put) years, one of the most iconic and charming figures of the underground scene.

Gifted with a unique voice – heavy, imposing and, at the same time, soulful and melancholic – he has released some sensational albums during his solo career («The Winding Sheet»/ 1990, «Whiskey For The Holy Ghost» / 1994, «Scraps At Midnight» / 1998, «I’ll Take Care Of You» / 1999, «Field Songs» / 2001, «Bubblegum» / 2004) and has collaborated with some of the greatest names of the modern Rock scene, like Queens Of The Stone Age, or Greg Dulli, η PJ Harvey, οι Masters Of Reality, as well as with Unkle, the Soulsavers and Isobel Campbell.

Dance me to the end of Greece 1... Foreign Tourists in Greece: Performance at the Benaki Museum

The Benaki Museum presents the show in the Piraeus Street building “Dance me to the end of Greece 1…Foreign Tourists in Greece” which will last from 17/02/2012 until 18/02/2012.

This is the first stage presentation of travel texts signed by famous travelers of the 19th and 20th centuries.

The actors of the show participate in a storytelling forum, representation and song through poems by Byron and Satovriandos set to music, while they animate the testimonies of famous travelers such as Hans Christian Andersen, Gustave Flaubert, but also the younger Jacques Lacarriere and Henry Miller.

Adel: The winner of this year's Grammys

Nikos Kalamos: I was trained to play the stink with color

With baggage from his six-year stint next to Stella Adler in New York and what the teacher has said - such as that "the last stage of vanity is success" - Nikos Kalamos is a modern hermit of the theater. I started…

Και τότε μου είπε να έρθω στη Νέα Υόρκη για να παρακολουθήσω ανάλυση κειμένου στο στούντιό της. Εμεινα έξι χρόνια με τη Στέλλα. Yes, ήταν μεγάλη σε ηλικία και είχε πει στους δημοσιογράφους να μη λένε την πραγματική της ηλικία. Εγώ τη γνώρισα όταν ήταν 93. Πέθανε 13 years later. Πέρασε τα 100 διδάσκουσα.

Εμαθα…
Να είμαι χαλύβδινος απέναντι στην κριτική. Η Αντλερ μάς έκανε σκληρότατη κριτική. also, μας έλεγε ότι το τελευταίο στάδιο της ματαιοδοξίας είναι η επιτυχία. «Θέλω να κάνετε το δικό σας γκρουπ. Να μην πηγαίνετε στον κάθε παραγωγό και σκηνοθέτη» μας έλεγε. Μισούσε τους σκηνοθέτες… Παράλληλα με τις σπουδές, απέκτησα πρόσβαση στα off και off Broadway θέατρα. Επαιξα σε 18 ξένες παραγωγές στη Νέα Υόρκη και σε τρεις στο Λος Αντζελες.

Επέστρεψα…
Στην Ελλάδα το 1990. Πέντε χρόνια αργότερα δημιούργησα το Θεατρικό Φυτώριο Αίγινας. Δουλεύω με ερασιτέχνες όλων των ηλικιών και τάξεων. Είχαμε έναν γιατρό, έχουμε εκπαιδευτικούς, ανθρώπους που δουλεύουν στον Δήμο Αίγινας, σπουδαστές κ.ά. Αυτό μου δίνει την ανεξαρτησία μου – και αυτή θεωρώ ότι είναι η επιτυχία του τεχνίτη: να είναι ανεξάρτητος από παραγωγούς. Οταν έχει κανείς δική του ομάδα, επιλέγει τα κείμενα που θέλει και έχει απεριόριστο χρόνο να δουλέψει. Η τελευταία δουλειά που κάναμε στο Φυτώριο ήταν η «Καταστροφή» του Μπέκετ. Για να παρουσιάσουμε ένα έργο επτά λεπτών, δουλεύαμε έξι μήνες.

Δεν λησμόνησα ποτέ…
Αυτό που μας είπε η Αντλερ όταν βρέθηκε στο θέατρο για να παρακολουθήσει την παράσταση «Λεωφορείον ο Πόθος» με τον Μάρλον Μπράντο. Οταν τον ρώτησε αν έχει αποφασίσει πώς θα παίξει τον Κοβάλσκι, εκείνος της είπε: «Στέλλα, όχι ακόμη». Αυτό σημαίνει ότι ο Μπράντο, μέχρι να βγει στο σανίδι, είχε τουλάχιστον δέκα επιλογές για το πώς θα παίξει – σημειωτέον, ήταν μαθητής της Στέλλα και αργότερα έγιναν και εραστές. Από γενναιοδωρία, αργότερα, ο Μπράντο τα έφτιαξε με την κόρη της.

Σκηνοθέτησα…
Τους πέντε μονολόγους που παρουσιάζω σε χώρους όπως ο Τόπος Αλλού ή το Ιδρυμα Μιχάλης Κακογιάννης. Οχι, δεν μισώ και εγώ τους σκηνοθέτες, απλώς θεωρώ ότι οι μονόλογοι μου δίνουν μια ελευθερία. Παίρνω το ράσο του ιερομόναχου και πάω τα έργα όπου θέλω.

Θεωρώ…
Οτι στα έργα που παρουσιάζω υπάρχει αυτό που λέγεται «αόρατη γεωμετρία». Είναι πολύ σπουδαία κείμενα αυτά. Επτά χρόνια και δεν είχα καταλάβει τι ήθελε να πει «Η Γυναίκα της Ζάκυθος» του Διονυσίου Σολωμού. Είναι ένα σκοτεινό, ελλειπτικό έργο. Και το σημαντικότερο σχόλιο που πήρα από σολωμιστές όταν το παρουσίασα στο παρελθόν είναι ότι φώτισα πτυχές του.

Ξεκινώ…
Με τον «Προτελευταίο των Μόνικιν» του Πάρι Τακόπουλου στον Τόπο Αλλού. Το έχω παρουσιάσει στο θέατρο του Γιώργου Αρμένη, στο Φεστιβάλ Εδιμβούργου και πριν από δύο χρόνια στο διεθνές Φεστιβάλ του Λονδίνου. Παρουσιάζω επίσης τη «Γυναίκα της Ζάκυθος» στο Ιδρυμα Μιχάλης Κακογιάννης στις 29, 30, 31 Μαρτίου και στις 1, 2 and 3 April. Subsequently, στις αρχές Μαΐου, θα ανεβάσω το «Drinking in America» του Ερικ Μπογκόζιαν στο Ιδρυμα Μιχάλης Κακογιάννης. Πρόκειται για δέκα μικρούς μονολόγους – ένα έργο σκληρό, αλλά έχουμε εκπαιδευτεί να παίζουμε τη βρώμα με χρώμα. Τώρα έχω βρει έναν καινούργιο φίλο, τον Ομηρο. Ανεβάζω τη Ραψωδία Α’ της «Οδύσσειας» σε μετάφραση Δημήτρη Μαρωνίτη στο Ιδρυμα Κακογιάννης στις αρχές Ιουνίου. End, the 2013 θα ανεβάσω το έργο της Ηρώς Διαμαντούρου «Μια νύχτα χωρίς τον Σάντσο», επίσης στο Ιδρυμα Κακογιάννης. Τα κείμενα θα τα πρωτοπαρουσιάσω το καλοκαίρι στην Αίγινα, σε ένα θαυμάσιο αμφιθέατρο στο Ελλάνιον Ορος.

Επέλεξα…
Να ζω κοντά στη φύση, διότι γίνεται κανείς πιο ουσιαστικός μέσα σ’ her. Απομυθοποιεί πολλά πράγματα. Οπως τον θάνατο, που είναι υπαρξιακός σταθμός. Η φύση είναι το μέτρο της ζωής και εγώ μένω στην καρδιά της φύσης, σε ένα βουνό. Δεν πατάει εδώ άνθρωπος, μόνο κανένας φίλος. Ξέρετε, η Αίγινα είναι ένας χώρος κρυμμένων ανθρώπων. Μένουν πολλοί σοβαροί άνθρωποι εδώ. Είναι μια μικρή Ελλάδα.

Δηλώνω…
Μαθητευόμενος ηθοποιός. Και δεν το λέω από μετριοπάθεια. Θα πρέπει να είναι πολύ δύσκολο να είσαι επαγγελματίας ηθοποιός στην Αθήνα. Γιατί ίσως υποχρεωθείς να κάνεις κάτι που δεν αντιπροσωπεύει τη βαθύτερη τέχνη σου, ώστε να πληρώσεις το ενοίκιό σου. Εγώ για να μπορέσω να συντηρηθώ επισκευάζω παλιά έπιπλα. Και στη Νέα Υόρκη έτσι επιβίωσα. Αλλά αυτό με ικανοποιεί γιατί κάνω κάτι με το σώμα μου.

Believe…
Οτι ο Ελληνας είναι γεννημένος για τη σκηνή. Η γλώσσα είναι όχημα για τον ηθοποιό, συν του ότι έχει και αυτή την τεράστια συλλογική μνήμη – έχουν περάσει όλες οι φυλές από αυτόν τον τόπο. Fri.’ όλα αυτά λέω στους ηθοποιούς του Φυτωρίου: «Αφήστε λίγο την Ελλάδα και πηγαίνετε να μείνετε στο Λονδίνο ή στο Δουβλίνο, που είναι η καλύτερη θεατρική πιάτσα στον κόσμο, ή στη Νέα Υόρκη». Και εγώ έβγαλα τη δραματική σχολή του Βαφειά στην Αθήνα, αλλά μου πήρε τρία χρόνια στην Αμερική για να… να ξεχάσω ό,τι είχα μάθει. Παίζαμε, remember, με στόμφο, δεν κάναμε ανάλυση κειμένου και οι καθηγητές είχαν τον νου τους πότε θα πληρωθούν. Αυτή ήταν η μοναδική τους μέριμνα.

Διαπιστώνω…
Οτι ο κόσμος έχει ανάγκη για νέους ήρωες, νέα πρότυπα. Τώρα περισσότερο από ποτέ. Το συνειδητοποιώ διότι έχω δει παραστάσεις στην Αθήνα με γεμάτες τις αίθουσες – Fri.’ όλη την κρίση. Well, ο κόσμος κάτι ψάχνει να βρει. Τη χαμένη πνευματικότητά του, perhaps. Bad lies, πρώτα χάσαμε κάτι άλλο και στη συνέχεια τα λεφτά μας.

Carmen Souza live at the Half Note Jazz Club

Το Half Note Jazz Club παρουσιάζει την Η σπουδαία Carmen Souza, μια αναγνωρισμένη πια παρουσία της world σκηνής, from Wednesday
15 February and for 5 συνολικά εμφανίσεις.

Η Carmen Souza από το Πράσινο Ακρωτήρι, είναι αναντίρρητα μια ξεχωριστή μουσική παρουσία τοποθετημένη καλλιτεχνικά στο σημείο «συνάντησης» της παραδοσιακής μουσικής του Cabo Verde και της world Jazz. Μεγαλωμένη σε περιβάλλον Κρεωλών, ανακάλυψε από πολύ μικρή το «Sodade», του συναισθήματος προσμονής και νοσταλγίας για κάποιον ή κάτι που λείπει και φέρνουν μέσα τους γενιές παιδιών ναυτικών, όπως εκείνη! Ξεκίνησε μικρή να τραγουδά σε χορωδία Gospel ενώ επηρεάστηκε από μουσικούς όπως ο Luis Morais αλλά και Nina Simone ή Billie Holiday.

O κορυφαίος μπασίστας της Πορτογαλίας Theo Pas’cal, παραγωγός και μέντορας της Carmen που ανακάλυψε το πληθωρικό της ταλέντο, την ώθησε στο να ακούσει πολύ την κορυφαία τζαζ του Bill Evans, του Hancock, του Miles ή του Horace Silver κι αυτό θα παίξει ρόλο στην μουσική της πορεία. Η πρώτη της δισκογραφική δουλειά το 2005 έκανε τεράστια επίτυχία, με υλικό πολύ ενδιαφέρον σε κρεολική διάλεκτο όπου οι παραδοσιακοί ρυθμοί του Cabo Verde και τα mornas, συνδυάζονται με σύγχρονες jazz φόρμες και δίνουν μία τελείως άλλη διάσταση στην μουσική του Ακρωτηρίου. Της ίδια χρονιά αποθεούμενη από το διεθνή τύπο, θα κλιθεί στο περίφημο Φεστιβάλ Womad στην Αγγλία και μετά σ’ όλα τα Φεστιβάλ του κόσμου. Ακολούθησαν ακόμη δύο πολύ επιτυχημένοι δίσκοι, το “Verdade” και το “Protegid” που θα προταθεί και για καλύτερο άλμπουμ world μουσικής το 2010.

Η Souza είναι πια μια μεγάλη φωνή και δύναμη της world μουσικής, που έχει τεράστια απήχηση και ζήτηση σε όλες της jazz σκηνές του κόσμου και έρχεται με το κουαρτέτο της να ενθουσιάσει κι εμάς…

Made in Britain: Exhibition from the collection of the British Council 1980-2010 at the Benaki Museum

The Benaki Museumpresents the report«Made in Britain» with works from the collection of the BritishCouncil 1980-2010. The exhibition will last from15 February until 22 Apriland theinaugurationwill be held on14 February on 20.00 at night.
TheBritish Council it has one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary British art in the world. Today in his collection it counts 8500 pieces from more than 1650 British artists.
In the exhibition co-organized byBenaki MuseumandBritish Council, you can get in touch with some of the most beautiful works in this collection, in an exhibition that will span the decades 1980-2010.
The report includes approx 150 works by a wide range of artists, among whomοι Keith Arnatt, Helen Chadwick, Peter Doig, Gilbert & George, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Mark Titchner, Cornelia Parkerand Mark Wallinger.
This meeting of artists so diverse illustrates the breadth and diversity of British art throughout this period. This is a unique opportunity for art lovers who wish to experience up close the creative journey of some of the most prolific contemporary British artists of the last thirty years.
Within this time period covered by the report, the role of art in British society has undergone enormous changes. From Gilbert's Intellectual Depression & George (1980) up to Gary Hume's Sister Troop (2009) the exhibition narrates how art has mapped and recorded these changes – being at the forefront of social change itself.
The last thirty years, modern art has arguably turned its attention to more social issues of British society. This shift in interest in social issues can be partly explained by the arrival of a new, of an enterprising and ambitious generation of artists at the beginning of their decade 1990. These artists are known collectively as YBAs (Young British Artists) and to them belong names like the aforementioned Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas, but also Michael Landy and Jake and Dinos Chapman.
Other factors such as the establishment of the Turner Prize the 1984 (the first award established for young contemporary artists in the UK) or the opening of the Tate Modern the 2000, the abolition of the ticket to public galleries and museums 2001, have all contributed to bringing contemporary art closer to a much larger audience – and often to an audience that has no previous experience or knowledge of the visual arts.
During the exhibition there will be educational programs and many events that will start from the opening of the exhibition, at 14 February with the speech of the British artist Mark Titchner.
THEMark Titchner, who has been described as one of the most charismatic British artists of our time, he will come to Greece especially on the occasion of the exhibition at the Benaki Museum and will talk about his work, which he describes as "a dialogue in how each receives thoughts and ideas".
THEMark Titchner was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2006 for his personal exhibition in which he dealt with the tensions between various belief systems, from religion and politics to philosophy and science.
