Φενιλεθιλαμίνη, ντοπαμίνη, σεροτονίνη: τι σχέση έχουν αυτά τα ονόματα με τον έρωτα; Πρόκειται για ορμόνες που επιδρούν στην ερωτική διάθεση. Και επιβεβαιώνουν τη ρήση ότι ο έρωτας είναι θέμα χημείας. Ο έρωτας είναι ωραίος. Οι ορμόνες όμως είναι καλύτερες. Όταν είναι κανείς ερωτευμένος αισθάνεται πως αιωρείται στον έβδομο ουρανό ή ότι βλέπει τον κόσμο μέσα από ένα πολύχρωμο καλειδοσκόπιο. Στο σώμα του όμως επιδρά ένα σύστημα ορμονών που έχει κάθε άλλο παρά ρομαντικά ονόματα. Ο τρόπος με τον οποίο λειτουργεί αυτό το σύστημα δεν είναι απολύτως σαφής. Κι αυτό επειδή οι περισσότερες από αυτές τις ορμόνες σχηματίζονται στον εγκέφαλο, απ’ όπου δεν μπορεί κανείς να λάβει δείγμα αίματος για να κάνει μετρήσεις. Το βασικό μέσο πρόσβασης σε αυτές τις ουσίες είναι οι τομογραφίες, οι οποίες καταγράφουν τις δραστηριότητες σε κάποια τμήματα του εγκεφάλου.
