Photo exhibition highlights the enormous problem of slums
Five characteristic slums of the world, in Dhaka, in Karachi, in Johannesburg, in Port-au-Prince and Nairobi, form the backdrop of a major photography exhibition signed by an equal number of award-winning photographers from the Noor agency.
This time the exhibition is being held in Thessaloniki as part of the 14th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.
THE Stanley Green, or Alexandra Fagina, The Francesco Zizzola, The Jon Lowenstein and the Pep Bonnet they are the protagonists of the photos behind the lens, while the faces of hundreds of anonymous destitute and homeless "decorate" the content of the exhibition entitled "Urban Survivors – Surviving in the slums of the world» and is housed in the Contemporary Art Center of Thessaloniki in Warehouse B1, in the Port of the city.
Nowadays, more than one in ten people on the planet lives in a slum. With the aim of raising awareness and informing the public about the specific issue, the exhibition reveals the harsh daily life of these populations, who are either evicted or forced to move from their homes.
Not by chance, the idea for the exhibition (as well as its title) arose out of MSF's 'Urban Survivors' project and was produced in collaboration with Noor Photography and Darjeeling Productions.
"The exhibition ”Urban Survivors – Surviving in the slums of the world” brings to the surface a problem that is now outside our door" said the curator of the exhibition Mr. Thanos Stavropoulos, while on her part, Mrs. Melina Spathari of the organization Doctors Without Borders stated among other things that "through this specific exhibition we communicate to the people who support us the phenomenon of urbanization, which we are no longer allowed to treat as the ”invisible elephant in the room”. Next to Dhaka, Port-au-Prince and Karachi, we added Athens to our scope of action. THE,what happens in Haiti has an impact here too, the phenomenon is the same: people who are faced with the insecurity of shelter and their very livelihood. If until yesterday these situations were similar to us ”exotic”, today we cannot say that they are unknown to us".
