Heavy rain, in the cinemas

The long-awaited return of the legendary James Bond to the big screen will be with the film “Heavy rain“, directed by Sam Mendes and starring Daniel Craig Thursday 1 November 2012.

Skyfall is not just the 23rd movie starring him 007. It is the film that coincides with fifty years of James Bond.  All it takes to make Ian Fleming's legendary agent the longest-lived bachelor in the history of cinema. Half a century after Dr. No (1962), with six actors having stepped into the shoes of the role, with countless girls and journeys to all corners of the planet and iconic rivals along the way, James Bond has seen a lot and done even more. And then, a golden anniversary deserves to be what, what does he want, from boring or glamorous to simply formal.

In the case of Skyfall, one thing is certain: that the whole team – old and new-  who worked for this film, took the opportunity to give a thorough account of this British phenomenon called Bond. So, Daniel Craig, who plays the role for the third time, dives, literally and not,  into the deep to find what this something is, beyond the chase and women,  which has determined him 007 until today. Something similar happens to Judi Dench, who returns after seven tougher films,  but also more vulnerable than ever. They are both tired, or to be precise, under the confident direction of Sam Mendes, they dare to be tired. And they have every reason,  with the first and best being the blistering opening action scene. With thousands of kilometers separating them (he is in Turkey, while she gives orders from MI6 headquarters in London) , M will make a decision that will tear them both apart. So, the femme fatale in the new James Bond film is none other than M, who thanks to her maternal dimension awakens various personal demons, including those of the evil Javier Bardem who does not attack to destroy the world, but because he wants to end a personal affair. Like the weapon young Q supplies to Bond, which is activated solely by its own fingerprints, so Skyfall ultimately tells personal stories.

Meantime, Adele's song has been dressed up in a dreamlike and highly encrypted underwater sequence, great lines - that will go down in history-  a host of sly references to his universe have also been made 007 has emerged from the most unexpected corners. This is definitely a positive report.

Summary:
Bond's latest mission in Turkey doesn't end well at all, and some of the world's most important secret agents are irreparably exposed. The MI6 offices are bombed and M (Judi Dench), under pressure and challenge from the new chairman of the Secret Service and Security Committee, Mallory(Ralph Fiennes), is forced to take drastic measures. MI6 is under threat from within and without, and M can trust no one else, except for Bond. O 007 plunges into the dark past, with Agent Eve as her only assistant, (Naomie Harris) to follow the trail of the mysterious Silva (Javier Bardem), whose motives he must discover.

“The Daniel Craig era comes of age with a tough Bond who takes risks for good. You know something; After all, you can teach old dogs new tricks". Neil Smith, Total Film

"They were needed 23 movies and 50 years to learn the truth about Bond,  but it was worth it… Without sacrificing the action, Mendes puts the actors in the spotlight, explores their wonderfully complex emotional world in ways that the show has never dared to do before”. Peter Debruge, Variety

“Dramatically riveting, but retaining its underground humor, this beautiful film will be loved by loyal fans around the world as one of the best Bond films ever". Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

"Skyfall is a great British film. From the moment the orchestral sound pours in with Adele's voice and a nostalgic shiver runs down the audience's collective spine, we know this will be a triumphant return to classic Bond". Kate Muir, The Times of London

"Mendes doesn't hesitate to let the quieter dramatic moments breathe... and master cinematographer Roger Deakins makes the ambitious action scenes the most beautiful in Bond's fifty-year career" Robbie Collin, The Telegraph

Trivia/Fun Facts:
Ο ρόλος του Q έχει τη δική του ιδιαίτερη ιστορία. Bond's right-hand man first appeared in 'Dr. no", where the role of Major Boothroyd was played by Peter Burton. He was followed by Desmond Llewelyn for 17 films between 1963-1999. Later, we had the opportunity to enjoy John Cleese who started as R, i.e. Q's sidekick in The World Is Not Enough to be promoted to Q's role in Die Another Day.
Παρόλο που η αρχική σκηνή διαρκεί μόλις δώδεκα λεπτά, it took three months for rehearsals and two months for filming.
There, after all, most of them have been filmed – with the exception of three- his movies 007.
Για το Skyfall κατασκευάστηκαν 31 different scenes, among which are the underground offices of MI6, the interior of the Golden Dragon Casino, the exterior of Dead City (which is located on a deserted island near Macau and hosts the subchthonian Silva).
Για τη σκηνή, where a subway train derails with dangerous results, the workshop built 2 wires of regular dimensions, that they weighed 7 tons each.  They had been placed on the stage 10 cameras with remote control, to capture the conflict from various angles, without having to endanger anyone.
Για το εξωτερικό του Golden Dragon Casino, were recruited 12 craftsmen from China to manufacture 300 authentic Chinese lanterns.
Πολλές εξωτερικές σκηνές γυρίστηκαν στο Λονδίνο, even those set in China. Specifically, the fourth tallest building in London, o Broadgate Tower, it was dressed and lit to look like a company building in Shanghai.
Η National Portrait Gallery είναι ο τόπος συνάντησης του Bond με τον νέο Q, in one of Skyfall's most enjoyable performances.
Σε συνεργασία με τις αρχές του Λονδίνου, the production managed to close Vauxhall and Milbank Bridge for a spectacular explosion scene.
Τα γυρίσματα στο μετρό του Λονδίνου έγιναν στον σταθμό Charing Cross μέσα σε 4 Weekends.
Στο προτελευταίο βιβλίο του Ian Fleming ("You Only Live Twice"), the author mentioned some facts about Bond's family roots, revealing that his father was from Scotland. This detail plays a catalytic role in the film, as one of Skyfall's most beautiful scenes was shot in the beautiful Scottish countryside.
Η εισαγωγική σκηνή της ταινίας γυρίστηκε στην Κωνσταντινούπολη και στην Αντάνα. Bond, neither more nor less, pursues a dangerous rival in the Eminomu district, one of the old and beautiful areas of Istanbul, which is definitely one of the busiest spots. For the needs of this particular sequence, the production created a huge market, where they were housed over 250 benches.
Η εντυπωσιακή καταδίωξη συνεχίζεται στις θεαματικές οροφές του Grand Bazaar, which, under normal conditions, hosts 400,000 visitors daily. Filming took place only on Sundays, when the bazaar was closed. For this reason, an entire business was set up for as many Saturday nights as it took, in order to clothe the bazaar.
Ένας στόλος από 12 Land Rover Defenders and 16 Audi A5s were modified for this particular scene.
Δεν είναι η πρώτη φορά που ο James Bond επισκέπτεται την Κωνσταντινούπολη. The first time was in the movie "From Russia with Love", where Ian Fleming himself accompanied producers Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman and the crew to the shoot. The second time was a short stint in The World Is Not Enough.
“Take the Bloody Shot”. One of the film's most iconic lines is heard while Bond is fighting his adversary, on the roof of a moving train. This shoot was one of the most challenging and complex parts of the intro sequence. The specific scene that defines the plot of the film, takes part in the Varda Bridge, which has been built the 1912 and has height 100 meters . Important detail, considering that the scene ends with Bond falling into space. To achieve this, a crane had to be added to one of the wires from which the stuntman was tied by a very long rope.
Η δική μας Τόνια Σωτηροπούλου, may have a brief appearance in the film, but enjoys special treatment, as her role, ensures her particularly intimate moments with the sought-after bachelor. The scene was shot on a remote beach in Turkey, where production had to negotiate with 613 landowners so he could return there.

Anna Vissi "I have revised my cassette"

Anna Vissi spoke to the camera of the "Elene" show about her tape, which he has reviewed, hysteria, which still experiences -but with limits-, but also for what is missing from her life.

"Of course I have revised my case. And damn it I sang for years as long as I have a plate of food and can live, i would sing. I don't sing for money. These come together, because somehow I have to be paid. But I sing because I really like it".

Speaking of the hysterias he used to experience to a greater degree, Anna Vissi called them "human". "Hysteria is a human flaw that should not bother others. I'm bothered by the hysteria when they become empathetic, vices and “negativity” towards your partners, towards your relationship or the friends you have".

What is she missing?; “It will be a shame to say that I am missing something. I would probably like some rest for my voice so I can do what I have to do".

Write a story on Twitter

The fiction contest of the well-known social networking medium poses new expressive challenges in literature

According to a literary legend, Ernest Hemingway once bet that he could write a story in less than 10 words. He earned it with a suspenseful story, dramatic tension and… only six words: «For sale: Baby shoes, never worn» (They are sold: Baby shoes, unbearable).

Total, in English, 27 characters, many less than a tweet, which comparatively gives to the lovers of the small, smallest form 140 characters to tell a story, such as the stories to be told by those participating in Twitter's five-day online literary fiction festival at the end of November.

“Twitter is a place where we tell stories. They often involve news reporting, the policy, sports or music, but, as it turns out, Twitter is also a place for telling fantastic stories. As argued by a professor from Michigan State University, "tweeting can be considered a new literary practice". We want to celebrate it!». With these words the Twitter team announces the launch of the Twitter Fiction Festival (#twitterfiction), a creative experiment in fictional storytelling involving writers from around the world.

“Twitter has already hosted great literary experiments, like the “Black Box” by Jennifer Egan, the “Small Fates” by Teju Cole or @mayoremanuel by Dan Sinker. Now we want to go further," says the Twitter team.

If the question is simply brevity, the comprehensive, laconic expression in 140 words, then the medium is not original. The 2007, when Twitter was still a baby (was founded on 2006) Britain's Guardian newspaper asked established writers to follow Hemingway's example by writing six-word stories. John Banville, David Lodge, Jeffrey Eugenides, the A. S. Bayat, Ian Rankin, recent bi-Booker laureate Hilary Mandel and other contemporary authors, overall 35 writers, they rose to the challenge. At best, like that of David Lodge ("Apple;"No." “Try it!""ADAM;» My God!) witty humor prevails. In the worst case, the venture ends up a flop, unintelligible verbal utterance.

A similar experiment with the tweet microform was recently attempted in Greece by the authors of the e-book Tweet_Stories – Literature in 140 characters (Openbook.gr, 2012), which is a digital version of the Openbook library. "Can literature work in the suffocating context of the very small form of social networks;" was the question that was posed to internet users, the Cretan author and IT professor Giannis Farsaris explained to "Vima", who edited the volume.

"Many renowned Greek writers responded to the challenge, like Evgenios Trivizas, Manos Kontoleon, Ersi Sotiropoulou, Nikos Dimos, Eleni Ghika, Sakis Serefas, Christoforos Kasdaglis and dozens of others, who succeeded and squeezed the inspiration, the plot and dialogue of their stories within the narrow confines of Twitter posts”, clarified for us.

Gathered more than 600 original micro-stories, of extent up to 140 characters. Reading them 371 selected to be published in a freely distributed e-book, one understands how difficult it is to write a story in a tweet. Most formulations end in aphorisms, some sarcastic and some witty, or they slip into high school scrapbook sentimentality, in the catchword complaint or in the elliptically distorted expression of the ad.

But there are signs that the project can be successful, such as, for example, the following: “Always carry live with you to eat. They don't rot. All that matters now is survival. The road. The trip. “Boy; My son; Come here”.» (# 006: Kyriakos Athanasiadis). "He's coming on time. He wears his everyday, I take out the good tableware. I remember the wrong person, it seems. But the name is the same. It never goes away.” (# 008: Dimitris Athinakis). «”Please ma'am, I have three days to eat”. She didn't turn to look at him. He couldn't look Mr. Head in the eye again." (034: Alexander Vlazakis). “Look at the Word. If the State Service came to check; Lexi and him, a new environment. Read it again, ready for anything!» (# 078: Mitsakos Zaf). “He liked men. The mother did not speak to him, but on holidays he sent ties. After the funeral he resigned. Now he sells books at bazaars.” (# 332: Annita Hadjikou).

The suggestive, staccato, terse way of tweets, the suggestive and witty style also inspired their 'Twitterature: The World’s Greatest Books in Twenty Tweets or Less» (Viking/Penguin 2009) by Alexander Eichmann and Emmett Rensin. The sophomores, then, students at the University of Chicago summarized 80 known texts, from Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey" to Shakespeare's "Hamlet", "Anna Karenina" by Tolstoy, "Great Expectations" by Dickens and "Harry Potter" by J. K. Rowling in 20 tweets each. Some called the result a desecration of literary masterpieces. Others found it hilarious. Albert Camus' "The Stranger" ended up like this: "The mother is dead. Unknown today or yesterday./ At the funeral. I'm bored. People look sad. This old man “arranged” the mom!/ The funeral was not about to end. I banished a woman on the way back. I will see her tomorrow, maybe it suits me. /… ».

The book of the two young men was published by the publishing house Penguin, which is not only the publishing house with the most famous series of modern classic literature but also shows great interest in literary experiments on the Internet. The 2007 had carried out the participatory literature program "Million Penguins", an experiment in writing a novel together, inspired by the logic of Wikipedia, in which they collaborated 1.500 people.

Participation, and not only the condensation in the limited space of 140 characters, seems to be the aim of the organizers of the Twitter Fiction Festival competition. They therefore ask those who wish to participate in the competition to specify in their application: “How will you use our real-time global platform and the content it offers - micro-stories in Tweets, Twitter chat, live-tweeting-, where anyone can contribute to your story at any time or, even better, how you plan to create new content on this platform;;».

We certainly expect that one of the most common practices in tweets, sending a URL (of the address of a resource on the World Wide Web), will also be used during the competition. The experiment will therefore also be extended in the direction of "hyperliterature", that is, interactive texts that incorporate and make extensive use of hyperlinks, interspersing the written word with other texts, picture, sound, maps etc. and catalyzing linear readout.

Brevity and fragmentation, sign language, polyphony and thematic variety, are the features of Twitter, which the American prose writer Jonathan Franzen, described in a recent interview as "unspeakably irritating". He commented that Twitter is an irresponsible medium, space not for serious readers and writers but for those who love to chatter about themselves unnecessarily and added: “Twitter represents everything I loathe. It is difficult to cite facts or structure an argument in 140 characters… It’s like writing a novel without the letter P…”.

Having studied philology, Franzen is of course aware that such expressive limitations, related to the length of a sentence or the number or type of letters to be used in a text are not an invention of Twitter. The pioneering French Workshop of Potential Literature OuLiPo by Raymond Kenaud, Francois Le Lione, Georges Perec et al. practices experimental literature from the 1960 placing various morphological constraints on literary composition and combining writing with painting and mathematics. Texts were written exclusively with words that start and end with the same letter or phrases that are completely missing a letter, like the novel "La disparition" (1969, The disappearance) by Georges Perec, where e is completely absent, the most common letter in the French language.

The point is that, despite their interest, these experiments usually fail to gain widespread acceptance, to transcend the narrow confines of the group that inspired them and to have duration. With Twitter we will see if in the age of the internet experimental literature can be more widely recognized or if traditional forms of storytelling prove stronger than the technological challenges.

The great new parameter introduced by the Internet and Twitter is time: We are watching a text in its genesis. The time interval of the tweets, their thickening or thinning over time is an element of style. Alongside, consumption of the text in real time greatly influences its meaning and interpretation.
