Mikis Theodorakis turns ninety years old today and on the occasion of his birthday – but also the informal "Year of Theodorakis" – many events are organized both in Greece and abroad, in honor of the great composer. The Palace Garden is expected to be packed tonight for the tribute, where the presence of the great musician, Eleni Vitali, Zacharias Karounis and Betty Charlauti collaborate with the Mikis Theodorakis Folk Orchestra to perform classical pieces and excerpts from "Axion Esti".
Today, besides, as in the next two days, the Second Program of Public Radio modifies its program in the context of the special Miki Theodorakis Week. In her frame, Is the motto of the 16th Spare Parts Bazaar 8 in the morning and’ throughout the day producers curate special shows, interviews, tributes, anecdotal recordings, rare material from the ERT archive along with live concerts.
Today, for example, Dimitris Trikas will host Maria Faradouri and they will talk about the common path of the performer with the composer (at 09.00). An hour later, on Maria Kozakou's show, new creators will play live Theodorakis' unrecorded songs and unreleased new arrangements.
At 12.00, Litsa Totska's guests are Giorgos Dalaras and Themis Moumoulidis to talk about their Miki. Immediately after, Giota Delona presents the work of Mikis Theodorakis "The Sun and the Time", while his show will be broadcast in the next two hours 1999 in which the composer talks about the "Axion esti".
IN CHANIA. Today, Chania also joins the dance of tributes – the composer hails from Galatas, Chania, who was born in Chios. At 20.30, an exhibition of archival material and a poster titled "Zorbas returns to his place" opens at the Great Arsenal, 50 years later" edited by Lefteris Lambrakis, which will last until 27 August.
An hour later, the film "Zorbas" by Michalis Kakogiannis with music by Mikis Theodorakis will be screened in the outdoor area of the former port pavilion at the Venetian Port of Chania. Alongside, in Kipos and Attikon cinemas they will be shown until 4 August films by Kakogiannis, whose music was composed by Theodorakis: "Electra" (1962), "Iphigenia" (1977), "Trojans" (1971) and "Alexis Zorbas" (1964).
In Lavrio, from tomorrow until 6 August, an exhibition of archival material of Athanasia and Iros Markoulis will be held in the Technological and Cultural Park of the area. On Friday, in the same place there will also be an anniversary concert by the Lavrio Men's Choir.
IN EUROPE. After the symposium organized at the Sorbonne University on poetry, the music and politics of Mikis Theodorakis (18 to 20 June), the honor nights continue. At 23 August in Brandenburg Germany, a concert will be given under the direction of conductor Peter Kopp, in which works by Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn will be heard.
A month later, at 25 September, in the city of Una, Germany, there will be another concert with excerpts from "Worthy Home".
Maria Farandouri will have a key role in the European part of the celebrations, whose collaboration with Mikis Theodorakis dates back to 1963. She is from Nafplio where she is, gave us interesting facts: "In Central Europe, Mikis has the position of prominent melodist, considered the last of the greats, while in all these countries his material is in great demand.
Today, even the thirtysomethings are discovering it, while mainly in Germany they give another dimension to Mickey's music, more universal, more spiritual".
Now, on the occasion of Miki's 90th birthday, the international performer is constantly checking in at the airports of Europe for concerts based on the work of the great creator and accompanied by the German orchestra, which she herself has formed for a long time now for the needs of abroad. Take note: 23 September in Finland, 25 in Berlin, 27 in Amsterdam, 28 in Luxembourg, 29 in Antwerp, 2 October in Munich, 3 in Stuttgart, 7 in Zurich and 12 in Rotterdam. Giorgos Dalaras will cooperate in the last two.
