Seven people lost their lives between 1 to 8 January due to complications after contracting influenza A(H3N2), "enriching" the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's epidemiologic data on seasonal influenza in the most dismal way (ΚΕΕΛΠΝΟ). Overall, eight are the victims of the flu since last December, when the viruses of the disease began to circulate. KEELPNO experts attribute the increase in mortality to the high activity of the flu and the cold wave that has recently hit the country. Along with the jump in the number of fatal cases of the flu, there has been a sharp rise in severe cases that require hospitalization in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) – in the hard-to-find ICUs, as protothema.gr has written, where the waiting list numbers on a daily basis 50 with 70 patients. According to the KEELPNO data, 20 patients were admitted to ICU during the first week of the month and year. In total they have been recorded so far 39 severe cases of laboratory-confirmed influenza, who required hospitalization in the ICU.
