Candidate to 12 categories Steven Spielberg's historical epic tops the nominations but Franco-Austrian Michael Haneke's film features in both the best film and foreign language categories! And one (partly) Greek presence
The most impressive element of this year's nominations for the 85th Oscars is not so much the 12 that Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" received _something partially expected_ as much as the fact that Michael Haneke's "Love", a France-Austria co-production– Germany, is nominated both in the category of best film, as well as that of the best foreign language film. It is very rare that a film has simultaneously claimed Oscars in the category of best film and best foreign language film, and one of those rare cases was "Z" by Kostas Gavras and "Tiger and Dragon" by the Taiwanese Ang Lee whose latest film "Life of Pi" is in the running this year 11 Oscar. As for Haneke himself, the Austrian director has one nomination for directing and one for original screenplay.
The pie of this year's nominations is very well divided. Under "Lincoln", the "Life of Pi" by the Taiwanese Ang Lee with the 11 nomination, including those for Best Picture and Best Director. One place below, among the eight nominations we will find two films: The "Optimism Guide" by David O. Russell and Tom Hooper's musical "Les Miserables".
The "Business: Ben Affleck's ARGO is up for seven Oscars (from which, however, Affleck himself, who is also the protagonist, is missing) while three films equal five nominations: the western "Django the Punisher" by Quentin Tarantino, Kathryn Bigelow's political thriller Zero Dark Thirty (both are not nominated in the directing category) and "Skyfall" by Sam Mendes but only in technical categories and music.
The movie "Mythical Creatures of the South" was also a big surprise., a very harsh but at the same time optimistic creation of Ben Zetilin about the attempt of a minor girl to survive next to a sick father and the threat of a flood to destroy her community in the American South. Born in stios 18 Of August 2003, Honduras' Qubenzane Wallis is nominated in the A Actress category, making her the youngest actress ever to be nominated in this category. Overall, "Mythical Creatures" counts four nominations.
The performances of Denzel Washington and Naomi Watts in the films "Flight" and "The impossible" were enough to lead them to the Oscars for Best Actor and Best Actress. The members of the Academy worked very well also with regard to "The Master". Paul Thomas Anderson's overrated film was only nominated where it really deserved it, that is, for the performances of Joaquin Phoenix (Α΄ρόλος), Philip Seymour Hoffman (B’ role) and Amy Adams (Second role).
We should also point out a partially Greek presence at this year's Oscars, that of director Nikolai Arcel, who was born in Copenhagen to a Danish father and a Greek mother (from Mytilene). Arcel's film "The Queen's Love" is nominated for the Oscar for best foreign language film. But also Alexandre Desplaiss, candidate for music in "Business: Argo», we remind you that he originates from Volos.
The Academy Awards will be held on Sunday 24 February.
