At the recent presentation of the latest generation M5 the project leader responsible for the development of the model Max Ahme stated that "as power and torque increase, possibly the four-wheel drive is one-way". He later admitted that the Germans have also considered the Ferrari FF solution, όμως τόνισε ότι ένα σύστημα 4×4 would add 120 kg on the front axle of the M5 and this would have negative consequences on road handling.
Since the people at BMW abandoned the naturally aspirated engine solution in favor of the turbo, it is possible that in the future they will abandon the rear drive for some of their models, for the sake of four-wheel drive…
