Valentino Rossi on Yamaha

Thanasis Houdras writes

It's a little risky to make any announcements on the subject of "where is Rossi going anyway". However, the information is now sufficient to say it out loud. Rossi will ride the Yamaha 2013.

The Italian star is leaving Ducati for Yamaha and this will happen at the end of this season. The official announcement from Yamaha is expected on the morning of August 15, national holiday in Italy.

Beyond "Virgin's Day", in Italy it is also a national holiday of Ferragosto which also symbolizes the end of the period of "hard work in the fields". Terrible symbolism that is certainly part of Rossi's communication game.

The day after the announcement is also the opening day of the 11th round of the MotoGP world championship at the Indianapolis circuit. And another symbolism here as the Indianapolis track is the oldest on planet Earth, dates from 1909 and there the first speed race took place. He had been lying idle and snarling, until the 2008 it was renewed from the ground up and again experienced moments of greatness and glory.

According to the Italian press the decision was made a few days after the race at Laguna Seca which was nothing more than a repeat of Rossi's dismal performances so far.

Slow in testing, 106th in qualifying and 6-7th in the race. Only this time he didn't even finish as he crashed on lap 30 when he lost the front brake before the famous Corkscrew. Ducati's well-known front blur problem that was never fixed.

Despite efforts on Ducati's part that brought down the heavy artillery, Rossi wasn't convinced that anything would change. From the general leader of the company, managing director, Gabriele Del Torchio to the Audi equivalent, they shot "hares and petrels" but to no avail.

However, the sincere effort made by the Ducati management (Audi) reached the limits of despair. Filippo Preziosi himself went so far as to give a blank check to Masao Furusawa, the former head of the Yamaha M1 MotoGP development project, to go to Ducati to help improve the bike.

The proposal fell on deaf ears when Furusawa refused, embracing Japanese culture and the way Japanese people deal with such matters. He felt that such a move might be perceived as treason and apparently thought that he wouldn't want to end up doing hara-kiri…

Loyalty to the company is a primary element in Japanese life, but from’ that it seems and the Ducati people are not backing down. The proof is the words Preziosi allegedly said, responsible for the development of Ducati MotoGP, to Akira Nishimura, Japanese journalist: “I'm interested in making our bike better, even if it means losing my place".

The arrival of Furusawa was possibly the only reason Rossi would reconsider his stay at Ducati. But knowing this Furusawa, he also knew that if he didn't go to Ducati himself, it was extremely possible that Rossi would come to Yamaha! As it happened in the end.

All Rossi wanted was a fighting bike. In 33 his age can no longer afford to wait, if he wants to fight for podium places and wins again.

More from’ but everything interested him to start enjoying the games again so that he could find a reason to intensify his preparation and training.

Elements necessary with today's tough and against 10 years younger competition… Yamaha is already completely competitive, today. A characteristic from which the Ducati is noticeably far away, today…

Lightly bending worldwide sales for Yamaha

Thanasis Houdras writes for newsbeast.gr

The three-tiered company saw its sales decline by 5,3% in relation to A’ quarter of 2011 in global level. In particular, he had sold last year 1.689 million. points, while this year only 1.599 millions.

Because the large volume of sales is due to Asian markets, as causes of the reduction n Yamaha pointed to exchange rates and floods in Thailand.

However in the developed West during January – March saw an increase in sales. According to 25% in the now limited US market, where in absolute numbers he sold 20.000 motorcycles vs 16.000 last year. It had marginal gains in Europe as well, where he sold 45.000 two-wheelers, increasing 2% (from 43.000 last year at the same time).

This year Yamaha expects to sell 8.277 million two-wheelers worldwide, of which just 72.000 in the US and maybe others 150.000 in Europe. In which Europe the numbers are higher, because they also sell a lot more scooters than in the US.

In the quarterly balance sheet Yamaha reports gross income 2,099 di. euros worldwide. They are reduced by 4% compared to its first quarter 2011.

As for the profits, these amounted in the first quarter to 115.000.000 euro, amount representing a reduction 14%. This year the company expects total profits of "just" 170.000.000 euros from its global sales.

Yamaha dominated the second day of MotoGP testing

Yamaha's factory rider duo, namely Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo, they completed the second day, Wednesday of the tests in Sepang at the top of the charts - but in the absence of the Hondas.

Lorenzo tested an engine with different specifications, as well as Ben Spies who also rode various variations of the electronic package that controls everything on his bike.

Jorge Lorenzo then stated: "We started with a different engine to the one in the previous Sepang test a month ago. But today the comparison of the two engines was difficult, because the track conditions were much worse then and our times slower. The rain did not allow us to complete the day's program, so we have to try harder tomorrow. However, the response of the engine was better today and the entry into the corner was easier".

“I really liked the new engine, it is easier to drive, especially when turning. I feel like I have more traction in the back, which gives me confidence and I can drive the rear wheel even further in a controlled manner. The tears are also smaller now”, completed.

On the other, Ben Spies noted: "Everything went well in the morning. We waited for the weather to improve in the afternoon because the Yamaha engineers had made sure to load us with lots of new parts, so we didn't have time to deal with what everyone else was doing. We have to focus on our work, so that we can methodically check all refurbished parts and evaluate them. We only hope for better weather".

In the first two days all the drivers had a problem with the grip on the Sepang circuit. This is primarily due to the fact that the track surface was very dirty, from the car races that had been held there just a week earlier. But it is also due to Bridgestone's new single tires with a less rigid frame, but which contribute to the creation of chatter, i.e. high-frequency bounces of the rear wheels, especially when braking to enter a turn.

In general, the weather in Sepang at this time of year is good. The temperatures are not too hot but enough to dry the track after the regular afternoon rain. This year, Nevertheless, the midday rain turned out to be a long-lasting storm and prevented the teams from completing their program on the first and second day. Thursday is the last day of official testing.

Then the teams will meet again just before the first game of the season, in Qatar. In the interim, testing of the bikes with their factory riders is prohibited.
