Dustin Hoffman in… Greek board

"The lives of others" in the Athenian theater

Dustin Hoffman is, in duplicate, the protagonist of the upcoming theater season in Athens. That's because both films in which he won an Oscar for Best Actor will be played, prepared, on the board. "Kramer vs. Kramer" and "The Rain Man" -ή «Rainman», they are transferred in the winter to the stages of the Emporikon and Bretania theaters, respectively. A decade apart, the first is his production 1979 and his second 1988, while they are the ones who gave it to him, for the role of Ted Kramer and Raymond Rabbit the two Oscars of his career, until now at least….

Next to these two film adaptations, and a third, German production, comes to the Athens theater from autumn: The Oscar-winning best foreign film will be shown at the Thision theater (2006) by screenwriter and director Florian Henkel von Donnersmarck "The Lives of Others" -which also set a record number of nominations at the German Film Awards.

More detailed, directed by Eleni Scotti - who alongside her work at Epi Colonos theater with the group NAMMA- and performed by Mirella Papaikonomou, the Kramers will be brought to life by Dimitris Alexandris and Maria Zorba - Meryl Streep then won her first Oscar, for the second female role, as a wife and mother. On the subject of a couple's life after divorce and especially the way their young son experiences it, the production also won the Oscar for Best Picture 1979 while also achieving great box-office success. Directed and written by Robert Benton _based on the book by Avery Corman. The Greek production of Hellenic Theamaton for the Emporikon theater stage, includes among its contributors Dimitris Papadimitriou (music) and George Gavalas (scenery). Also playing are Athina Maximou, Christodoulos Stylianou, Dimitris Mavros and (alternately) three children.

Dimitris Lignadis brings to the stage of the central Bretania theater "Man of the Rain" with Christos Chatzipanagiotis and Yiannis Stankoglou, in the roles of the two brothers played by Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, in the late 80s. The movie, directed by Barry Levinson and written by Barry Morrow and Ronald Bass, it received rave reviews at the time, and alongside Hoffman's Oscar, it also won an Oscar for Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay. Its theme is the story of a selfish yuppie, by Charlie Babbitt, who discovers that his estranged father has died and left his entire fortune to his other son, the autistic Raymond, whose existence he was completely unaware of. The film was also a box office success…

End at Thision of Tournavitou Street, Alice Danezi – Knutsen, whom we met through the theater "Festen", in the same place six years ago, suggests "The Lives of Others", in the translation of Eris Kyrgia and the scenery of Kiki Pitta. This is the play by Albert Ostermeier based on the film by Florian Henkel von Donnersmarck: Based in East Berlin 1984, the play deals with the story of the famous playwright Georg Dreimann and his actress partner Christa – Maria Silland being watched by the Stasi spy, Gerd Whistler at the indirect prompting of the infatuated minister Bruno Hepf. When the spy as an uninvited "guest" and witness to the lives of others begins to harbor feelings of sympathy for the unsuspecting couple, nothing can stay the same anymore. Actors play: Anna Masha (Krista – Maria Silland), Manolis Mavromatakis (Gerd Whistler), Fanis Mouratidis (Georg Dreyman), Costas Berikopoulos (Bruno Hepf), Giorgos Symeonidis Mr. a. It is a production of the Lykofos company of Giorgos Lykiardopoulos.

Οι Maybeshewill, το εξαιρετικό Βρετανικό post rock κουαρτέτο, έρχονται για δύο μοναδικές εμφανίσεις σε Αθήνα και Θεσσαλονίκη, στις σκηνές του An Club και Eightball Club, τη Παρασκευή 21 and Saturday 22 Σεπτεμβρίου αντίστοιχα.

Η συνέχεια θα είναι εξίσου δυναμική με το “Not for Want of Trying” του 2008 να αναδεικνύεται από το (εξαιρετικά επιλεκτικό) Radio 1 του BBC ως άλμπουμ της εβδομάδας και με το περσινό “I Was Here For A Moment, Then I Was Gone” να τους εδραιώνει ως ένα από τα πλέον σημαντικά ονόματα της ορχηστρικής/post rock/electronica, οι Maybeshewill θα συνεχίσουν να μεγαλώνουν το ήδη μεγάλο fanbase τους με κοινές εμφανίσεις πλάι σε εξίσου σημαντικά ονόματα του post rock χώρου, αλλά και με παγκόσμιες sold out περιοδείες σε Ευρώπη και Ασία.

Pioneering filmmaker Chris Marker has died

The "Farewell Station" from his classic films

At the age 91 years, a day after his birthday, the French pioneer filmmaker Chris Marker died, who was recognized as one of the most important documentarians of post-war cinema.
Born in Neigi on 29 July, Christian Francois Bouchet Villeneuve, as his real name was, began by writing poems and literary essays to later turn to cinema, with the first film "Olympia 52" filmed in 1952.
Marker's film that put him in the pantheon of top filmmakers is his 28-minute masterpiece Farewell Station («La Jetee d’Orly»), production 1962 , a sci-fi war thriller that etched itself into the memory of the cinephile audience and was remade 1997 by Terry Gilliam as the "12 Monkeys". 1978 his film The Deep Sky is Red was a rather negative critical account of the events of May 1968 in a film-memoir on recent political history.
At the end of his decade 1980, 13 Greek words/concepts on which philosophers discuss , mathematicians , artists and intellectuals ,prompted Marker to compose The Owl's Legacy (1989), an embroidery 13 thirty-minute documentary.
The pan-Hellenic premiere of the above composition took place at the 24th "Cinema and Reality" festival.

Greek presence at the Venice festival

George Zois' upward trajectory continues with the "Final Titles"

Another Greek success in the cinematography took place today, as announced by the Venice Film Festival, the short film "End Titles" by the director Giorgos Zois was selected to be screened in the Orizzonti section of the 69th Film Festival to be held by 28 August until 8 September. It is not the first time that Mostra hosts the director. As you know, the prominent course of the "Casus belli", of Zoi's previous film, started at the Venice festival 2009.

Zois' film is the only Greek presence at this year's Mostra, whose competitive program appears quite reduced with 17 just titles. Among them Terrence Malick's latest film "To the wonder" with Rachel McAdams and Ben Affleck, Harmony Korine's "Spring speakers" with James Franco, Brian De Palma's 'Passion', also with McAdams but also Marco Bellocchio's latest film "Bella addormentata" starring Tony Servillo, main actor in the unfinished film of Theodoros Angelopoulos "The other sea"

From ancient Olympia to the ideal of Olympism

Great exhibition in Berlin on the religious, political and social person of the city

A bridge of culture, of trust and cooperation between Greece and Germany is being built these days in Berlin, a few steps away from the old cold war wall: The Martin-Gropius-Bau Museum in Niederkirchnerstrasse - opposite the German Ministry of Economy- is preparing to welcome the exhibition "Olympia: Myth, worship, matches", which will give German visitors the opportunity to get to know the place, the people, the everyday life and history of the holy city-symbol of the Olympic Games and to witness the birth of the sports ideal.

On the occasion of the Olympic Games starting in London in a few days, the exhibition will present to 3.500 sq.m. through 1.000 exhibits the sacred site of ancient Olympia and many aspects of ancient Greek worship and daily life "known to you Greeks, but unknown to the general public of Europe, which we must demonstrate and explain", pointed out Gereon Zyvernich, director of the Martin-Gropius-Bau Museum, during a press conference in Athens, at noon on Tuesday 24 July, which was also attended by the Deputy Minister of Education, of religion, Culture and Sports (Ministry of Health) Kostas Tzavaras, the director of the Hellenic Cultural Foundation Eleftherios Economou, the general secretary of Culture of the Ministry of Culture Lina Mendoni and the general director of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage Maria Andreadaki-Vlazaki.

"Through the exhibition it becomes clear what Greece has offered to Europe", the German director commented and the Greek deputy minister remarked that in our troubled times, and on the day of the celebration of 38 years since the restoration of democracy in Greece, "Olympia marks the course of human civilization, opposes the eternal to the perishable and sends a powerful message that reminds us that “Greek way” continues to inspire and move the peoples of the world".

The report is structured in three main thematic sections. The first presents the history of the ancient sanctuary of Olympia from the beginning of the 1st BC. millennium to the end of the Roman times, the political dimension of Olympia and its contribution to the formation of Hellenism are demonstrated and presented, through vows, representations on vases and other findings, the religious function of the sanctuary, the deities and heroes that were worshiped and the cult ceremonies that took place there.

The second section traces the history of excavations and research in ancient Olympia, by French archaeologists’ first it 1829 and by German archaeologists the 1875, following the thread of archaeological excavations in the area up to the present day.

The third section focuses on sport in Olympia and its social significance. In the rooms that will host this module, visitors to the exhibition will see records, They will also have the opportunity to admire portraits of distinguished spectators of the Games as well as coins and medals that confirm the pan-Hellenic importance of the Games.

1.000 exhibits – 150 are exhibited in a world premiere

Most of the exhibits in the exhibition come from Greek museums, mainly from the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, the National Archaeological Museum and the Numismatic Museum. Overall 564 ancient works will depart for Berlin, together with three modern copies, two models and eight modern commemorative medals. In the exhibition they lend exhibits in total 21 major European museums and institutions, including the Louvre Museum, the Vatican Museum, the Archaeological Museum and Sculpture Gallery of Munich and the National Museum of Rome.

150 Greek findings from excavations of the last decade in Mycenae and elsewhere will be presented for the first time to the general and scientific public and will be published in the catalog accompanying the exhibition.

The exhibition, η οποία ετοιμάζεται από το 2010, διοργανώνεται με πρωτοβουλία του Ελληνικού Ιδρύματος Πολιτισμού στο Βερολίνο και συνδιοργανωτές το Moυσείο Martin-Gropius-Bau, το Υπουργείο Παιδείας, of religion, Culture and Sports, το Γερμανικό Αρχαιολογικό Ινστιτούτο και τη Συλλογή Αρχαιοτήτων Κρατικών Μουσείων Βερολίνου και τελεί υπό την αιγίδα του Προέδρου της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας κ.

Αν πάντως η φιλόδοξη έκθεση φαίνεται δαπανηρή πολυτέλεια για την αλγεινή οικονομία του ελληνικού κράτους, the director of the Hellenic Cultural Foundation Eleftherios Economou, απαντώντας σε ερώτηση, διευκρίνισε ότι «το ελληνικό δημόσιο δεν επιβαρύνθηκε καθόλου με τα έξοδα της διοργάνωσης».
