The radiance of Apollo in ancient Corinth

Inauguration of the electric lighting of the monument on Saturday 26 January

The temple of Apollo in ancient Corinth is now illuminated and shining in the night after the completion of the project of electrification, the inauguration of which will take place on Saturday 26 January on 7 at night. The 17th Ephorate of Antiquities, which prepared the study in the summer of 2012 in collaboration with the architectural lighting company Diathlasis SA., to be subsequently approved unanimously by the Central Archaeological Council.
The projection of the monument and not the imposition of lighting on it was the basic principle of the study, but also the adaptation of the intensities both to itself and to its immediate environment, the performance of the shadings and the highlighting of the building material of its construction which was the porolit. Of course, the energy saving and the reversibility of the operation were taken into account in case it is decided to restore the temple, while an attempt was made to avoid light pollution.
The execution of the project is due to the engineer – engineer Mr. Georgios Veronikis in collaboration with the Smart Electric company, while it should be noted that it could not have been implemented without the cultural sponsorship of Club Hotel Casino Loutraki S.A., which was made following a relevant request from the ΓΖ΄ EPKA.
The temple of Apollo (550 – 540 e.g.) is an important monument, which marks the beginnings of the application of the Doric style in ancient architecture while reflecting the economic strength and commercial power of the city of Corinth in archaic times, when the city emerged as a leading power of the Greek world by establishing strong colonies.
But after the destruction of the city, the 146 B.C. and its re-establishment now as a colony of the family of the Roman emperor Octavian Augustus, the temple was remodeled, possibly to house the imperial cult. Its ruins have been visible for centuries but actually its first excavation took place in 1886 by the German archaeologist Wilhelm Derpfeld. Today, in addition to the foundation of the monument, seven columns of the western part of the occasion stand in place, as well as the southwest corner of the archway.

Theseus and Ariadne in Bull Island at the Badminton Theatre

The Badminton Theatre presents the children's show "Theseus and Ariadne on the island of Taurus" Is the motto of the 16th Spare Parts Bazaar 26 January – 28 April 2013.

Theseus and Ariadne on the Island of the Bulls, the first Greek children's theater production to stage Badminton, is a show that combines the spectacular with the educational character of ancient Greek myths.

The show tells the story of the mythical hero Theseus, son of King Aegeus and founder of Athens. Theseus, after breathtaking feats, travels to Crete and, with the help of the Gods and the beautiful Ariadne, defeats the Minotaur. The plot is riveting: all the Greek mythology - heroes participate in the adventure, mortals, wonderful but also terrible supernatural beings and of course the Olympian Gods.  From work to work and from city to city, knitwear is woven, hatred, suffering, but also friendships and loves and above all love! Battles languish on the road of Theseus, storms, mermaids – the adventures for true heroes never end.

Palaces parade on stage, seas, fortresses, ships, labyrinths, mermaids, bulls – bull eating –  gods emerging from the bowels of the earth, or fall from the sky, heroes, mortals, bright but also dark supernatural beings!

The text is signed by the acclaimed poet Stratis Paschalis.  The direction and choreography is by award-winning choreographer Sofia Spyratou. The original score was composed by one of the most remarkable young composers, who stood out through Schoolwave, Apollo Retsos. The imposing sets and costumes were designed by the always imaginative Manolis Pantelidakis, who created an impressive visual world, which gives the spectacle special, unforgettable authenticity. The size and quality of the show ensure, also, the Badminton Theater and Michalis Adams who signs the production.

More than twenty talented artists – aerial acrobats, actors, singers,  μουσικοί¬, some of whom are invited from abroad especially for this production – give flesh and bones to the legend.

The show stars one of the most important actors of the younger generation, Yannis Stankoglou, in the role of Theseus. With him the: Electra Nikolouzou and Georgina Paleothodorou. They also participate (in alphabetical order): Anna Athanasiadis, Alexandros Keivanais, Amalia Kosmas, Alexandros Laskaratos, Chloe Mantzari, Jeff Marawi, Yanna Medvedeva, George Pelagias, Chris Radanov, Alain Rivero Rodriguez, Yannis Smeros, Ivan Svitailo, Angeliki Trombouki, Alberto Feis, Rania Fovou, Iove Fragatou, Evi Hatzakis et al.

Theseus and Ariadne in Bull Island is a show that marks a new concept for children's theater, in a production equal to all the great shows hosted at the Badminton Theatre.
The archetypal Greek mythology and the rich, impressive sight for children are perceived as a top quality and priority educational process – especially in an age of emerging extremes – that the emphasis on reasonable moderation taught by classical education is vital.  Because the play talks about the meeting of two different cultures: on the one hand the measure and reason of Athens and on the other the mysticism and fist of the Minoan sea rule. The two cultures open a dialogue and get to know each other, conveying an important message to children.

The show is perfect for all ages!

Also in Madurai, Picasso met his last wife and muse, Jacqueline Rock, who stayed with him over 20 years, until the end of his life.

Along with the large collection of ceramics, the auction also includes several designs (in circulation) by Picasso, of Juan Miro and Andy Warhol owned by the mystery collector.

Tamikrest live in Athens and Thessaloniki

The Tamikrest, one of the most important bands that combine traditional African music with modern rock sound, are coming to Greece for the first time for two concerts in Athens (Friday 8/2, Fuzz Live Music Club) and Thessaloniki (Saturday 9/2, Gaia Live).

Following the paths set by, earlier than them, Tinariwen, Tamikrests honor their Tuareg origins (in the Tamashek language, in which they sing, their name means "bond", "alliance", "knot") only they preferred, in a particularly turbulent period for their people, put the Kalashnikovs aside and grab the electric guitars.

It helped in that direction, with no doubt, and their subsequent acquaintance and collaboration with Dirtmusic, the group formed by three great musicians: ο Chris Eckman (The Walkabouts), o Hugo Race (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Wreckery) and Chris Brokaw (Come, Codeine).

The main composer and leader of the band, Ousmane Ag Mossa, he listened to a lot of music from a young age, although his childhood - like that of the other members of the band - was marked by the civil war (1990-95) which focused on the Tuareg claim to autonomy. They have seen many relatives and friends get lost within this time and 2006, when new riots broke out, decided to use other means to gather the eyes of the world on the struggle of their people.

All young in age (near 20), combined the sounds they had, mainly via the internet, from names like Bob Marley, The Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and Dire Straits, with their own distinct musical tradition, attracting the interest of Dirtmusic, on a trip of the latter to their area.

It was the 2008, in the rural community of Essakane (80 kilometers from Timbuktu), where the Festival Au Desert took place. A magical sound pulled Eckman and his entourage into an awning where Tamikrest was improvising. A unique experience for everyone followed, when the interaction of, coming from different cultures and traditions, musicians evolved into one… three-day psychedelic glazing, which gave a different and completely essential essence to the concept of desert, before ending up with a monumental joint appearance on the main stage of the festival!

It was there that a strong friendship began that led the Dirtmusic to invite them to the capital of Mali where the latter were recording their excellent second album, “BKO”.

Tamikrest gave a new tone with their participation, offering a stunning version of Velvet Underground “All Tomorrow’s Parties”. When it came time for their first personal job, Chris Eckman was there again, producing the wonderful "Adagh", the debut of Tamikrest released in 2010 on behalf of the famous Glitterhouse Records, introducing their magic to the rest of the world.

Hypnotic traditional rhythms, psychedelic wah wah guitars, transcendental vocals reminiscent of chants, accompanied by keys or a solo violin, in a quirky mix that can be identified as touareg blues.

A year later, they also recorded their second album, Toumastin, in the same company and with the same rates, distracting audiences and critics around the world with the natural consequence of touring, mainly in Europe, and participation in major festivals. Nevertheless, as Eckman characteristically states, "Wherever they travel, they carry the desert inside them ”, while Tinariwen manager - and world music guru - Andrew Morgan calls them "the future of Tuareg music."

The same, first of all, they believe they are fighting for a better world, both for their people and for those who suffer from problems similar to those that plague their people.

"We must all recognize that we belong to a community and a culture, and this is exactly our strength in the eyes of others. First of all, we have to take care of them ourselves because otherwise no one else is going to do it. It is our duty to maintain our identity, to constantly claim our basic rights, both locally and internationally, and above all to emphasize our right to self-determination, without which it will be very difficult to deal with all the problems we face.

Touareg youth can not remain indifferent and indifferent the moment we become strangers in our own land, through the sale of many of our sites to multinational companies without our consent.
The same goes for the global community, who must not be deaf in the face of the possibility of extinction of people like us. The Touareg want to live free in their lands and see this form of colonization that has prevailed here finally come to an end. 50 years, that is, in brief, for too long now. ”

Golden globes 2013: Daniel Day-Lewis and Ben Affleck are the winners

The political film is distinguished with the awards of "Business: Argo», "Lincoln" and "Zero Dark Thirty"

Although very often we call them "harbingers" of the Oscars, the Golden Globes that were presented on Sunday night (13 February) from the Los Angeles Foreign Correspondents Association, it often isn't.
Maybe the Daniel Day Lewis award for him «Lincoln» bringing him one step closer to a third Oscar (has already won for 'Blood Will Be Spilled' and 'My Left Foot') but what about Ben Affleck's Golden Globe Award for Best Director for "Business:Argo»; Affleck isn't even nominated for this year's Oscar for directing! The "Business: Argo", which has been showing in Greek theaters since last Thursday, also won the Golden Globe for best drama film, something that might increase its chances of a best picture Oscar. The political film seems to be the hallmark of this year's Golden Globes.
The film that collected the most awards was the "Wretches", the musical version of Victor Hugo's novel directed by Tom Hooper. The film won in the category of best comedy or musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Comedy or Musical (Hugh Jackman as Giannis Agiannis) and in the second female performance category (Anne Hathaway).
In general anyway, most of the films that have received multiple Oscar nominations and were nominated at this year's Golden Globe Awards took from something. The ever-rising Jessica Chastain took home the Golden Globe for Best Performance in a Drama for her role as a CIA agent in «Zero Dark Thirty» by Kathryn Bigelow, The "Django the Punisher" by Quentin Tarantino walked away with two awards - best screenplay for Tarantino and best supporting actor for Austrian actor Christoph Waltz -, "Life of Pi" was awarded for Michael Dana's music and as expected, the «Rainfall» by Sam Mendes was singled out for the title song by Adele and Paul Epworth. The only distinction, end, of the film "Optimism Guide" was Jennifer Lawrence's award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Comedy or Musical. Michael Haneke's "Love" won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
The Foreign Correspondents' Association completely ignored the indie surprise "Creatures of the South" as well as Paul Thomas Anderson's already overrated "The master". The best animated film was considered "Brave" by the mighty PIXAR.
The best drama series was judged «Homeland» for which Claire Danes and Damien Lewis took home the awards for best actress and best actor in a drama series. The «Girls» was judged best comedy series and its star Lena Dunham received the corresponding award.
In the performance category of the best miniseries or TV movie, Kevin Costner took the award for the western series «Hatfields & McCoys» and Julianne Moore for "Game change».
Finally, in the secondary roles of television, Ed Harris won the Golden Globe for "Game change" and Maggie Smith for the extremely beloved in our country, "Downton Tower".
