Nominations for the Oscars have been announced

Their awarding will take place on 24 February

Candidate to 12 categories Steven Spielberg's historical epic tops the nominations but Franco-Austrian Michael Haneke's film features in both the best film and foreign language categories! And one (partly) Greek presence
The most impressive element of this year's nominations for the 85th Oscars is not so much the 12 that Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" received _something partially expected_ as much as the fact that Michael Haneke's "Love", a France-Austria co-production– Germany, is nominated both in the category of best film, as well as that of the best foreign language film. It is very rare that a film has simultaneously claimed Oscars in the category of best film and best foreign language film, and one of those rare cases was "Z" by Kostas Gavras and "Tiger and Dragon" by the Taiwanese Ang Lee whose latest film "Life of Pi" is in the running this year 11 Oscar.  As for Haneke himself, the Austrian director has one nomination for directing and one for original screenplay.
The pie of this year's nominations is very well divided. Under "Lincoln", the "Life of Pi" by the Taiwanese Ang Lee with the 11 nomination, including those for Best Picture and Best Director. One place below,  among the eight nominations we will find two films: The "Optimism Guide" by David O. Russell and Tom Hooper's musical "Les Miserables".
The "Business: Ben Affleck's ARGO is up for seven Oscars (from which, however, Affleck himself, who is also the protagonist, is missing) while three films equal five nominations: the western "Django the Punisher" by Quentin Tarantino, Kathryn Bigelow's political thriller Zero Dark Thirty (both are not nominated in the directing category) and "Skyfall" by Sam Mendes but only in technical categories and music.
The movie "Mythical Creatures of the South" was also a big surprise., a very harsh but at the same time optimistic creation of Ben Zetilin about the attempt of a minor girl to survive next to a sick father and the threat of a flood to destroy her community in the American South. Born in stios 18 Of August 2003, Honduras' Qubenzane Wallis is nominated in the A Actress category, making her the youngest actress ever to be nominated in this category. Overall, "Mythical Creatures" counts four nominations.
The performances of Denzel Washington and Naomi Watts in the films "Flight" and "The impossible" were enough to lead them to the Oscars for Best Actor and Best Actress. The members of the Academy worked very well also with regard to "The Master". Paul Thomas Anderson's overrated film was only nominated where it really deserved it, that is, for the performances of Joaquin Phoenix (Α΄ρόλος), Philip Seymour Hoffman (B’ role) and Amy Adams (Second role).
We should also point out a partially Greek presence at this year's Oscars, that of director Nikolai Arcel, who was born in Copenhagen to a Danish father and a Greek mother (from Mytilene). Arcel's film "The Queen's Love" is nominated for the Oscar for best foreign language film. But also Alexandre Desplaiss, candidate for music in "Business: Argo», we remind you that he originates from Volos.
The Academy Awards will be held on Sunday 24 February.

ΒAFTA 2013: Lincoln on top without Spielberg

The nominations for the British Academy Film Awards have been announced

If you had to pick an oddity in this year's British Academy Film Awards nominations, this is that Steven Spielberg's period biographical drama "Lincoln" dominates in number of nominations (ten!) without being nominated in the directing category! This can only tell us something about the value that awards sometimes have, because when a movie is supposed to be so good in so many areas under the director's watch, then how come she is not good in her directing;
More detailed, 'Lincoln' is up for best picture awards, adapted script, A’ male role (Daniel Day Lewis), B’ male role (Tommy Lee Jones), B’ female role (Sally Field), music, address photo, makeup, scenography and costumes. The name of the creator of the film, Steven Spielberg is only seen as a producer along with Kathleen Kennedy since "Lincoln" is nominated for best picture so the award goes to the producer.
One place below "Lincoln" is "Life of Pi" with nine nominations, followed by "Les Miserables" with eight. Ang Lee's allegory, which has been loved by the Greek audience as well, is in the running for the best film awards, directing, adapted script, music, photo, montage, scenography, sound and visual effects, while Tom Hooper's musical based on the pages of Victor Hugo, it is nominated among other categories for best film, A’ male role (Hugh Jackman) and B’ female roles (Anne Hathaway). The nomination in the category of best direction is also absent from here.
Also worth noting is the fact that Sam Mendes' Skyfall is up for eight awards with both Javier Bardem and Judi Dench nominated for B’ roles.
In general anyway, the nominations at this year's BAFTAs are well divided. Ben Affleck's political drama “Operation: "Argo", which opens tomorrow in theaters, is nominated in seven categories, Quentin Tarantino's western "Django the Punisher" and Joe Wright's "Anna Karenina" claim six awards, while Michael Haneke's masterpiece "Love" is nominated for director, the scenario, the performance of Emmanuelle Riva and also as the best non-English language film.
Finally, let's say that at BAFTA there are three categories of best film: the "Best Film" category (Best film), the "Outstanding British Film" category (Most outstanding British film») and "Non-English Film" (Film not in the English language). This confuses things somewhat because in the case of "Les Miserables" for example, the film is nominated for both Best Film and Outstanding British Film.
The winners will be announced on Sunday 10 February at the ceremony to be held at the Royla Opera House in London.

What are the plants of Paradise?

The garden of prayer according to a rare Byzantine manuscript of the 13th century

In this garden the olive tree signifies charity, the reed urges obedience, pomegranate is associated with courage and strength and citron with its fragrant essential oils indicates purity and sobriety. Because this garden is not like the others. Each plant has its exact place in it. Like every virtue in the human soul.
This is the garden of virtues, the garden of Paradise, the garden of eden. This is how a rare Byzantine manuscript found in Oxford mentions him. An anonymous 13th century text in particular, describing a garden somewhere in the Eastern Mediterranean, real and symbolic at the same time, emphasizing the ambiguous meaning he had for the Byzantine man: spiritual place of virtues and at the same time the tangible reality of a natural oasis.
"The Bible this delight of paradise / to the philomathy psychic he brings, / to the understandings according to mind it contributes". (This book will introduce the studious reader to the charms and graces of a heavenly garden., if he turns his whole thought to it). This is stated in the preface of the manuscript. It was one of the elements that charmed the professor Mrs. Sofia Rizopoulou to bend over him, when he accidentally came to her notice, as he studied botanical texts in Oxford's Bodleian Library.
Fourteen plants of the Mediterranean landscape are associated in the manuscript with a corresponding number of spiritual virtues. Each of them supports a virtue with the aim of all together acting uplifting and healing for the human soul. "With a perceptive eye the anonymous author of the manuscript deciphers the codes of plant life to compose a garden of virtues" says Mrs. Rizopoulou, impressed by the accuracy and vividness of the descriptions, as stated in the small study of the "Garden of Prayer" published by the Philodistry Association of Athens with the Kaleidoscope publishing house.
The nature
“Logs, branches, foliage, flowers and fruits, through the colors, the sounds, the smells, the flavors and the touch of a generous nature compose a unique continuum between the physical and the spiritual" notes Mrs. Rizopoulou, after, as he elaborates below, “the literal is here in excellent balance with the figurative in a particularly favorable approach – even praise – of the physical world through the senses".
There are three Propylaean trees in the garden of the virtues: the cedar, the cypress and the pine. Everything is slow growing and evergreen. And all suggest the ascetic life and temperance: "As for the plants, they always bear fruit during this time, nor bloom, else’ nor do they praise the whole fruit together, nor do they hold together in the end, and have the first, all things being so. Time is everything indeed, according to Solomon" (Just as plants neither bear fruit nor bloom all at the same time, but in each the fruits do not ripen at the same time, nor do the first fruits wait for the last, so here too. There is a right time for everything, as Solomon said).
The theft
The manuscript consists of 34 leaves with 1.100 verses in Greek microscript and is actually the work of two editors, since in the prologue the second refers to the first by adding five plants to the already existing nine.
However, a "stolen" product from the great trip to the East made by the English traveler and mineralogist Edward Daniew Clarke (1768-1822) it was the manuscript. Its exact origin, unknown, after he had visited all the great monasteries, distracting overall 94 volumes, of which the 38 it was in greek. In fact, with a clear conscience, as his reasoning was that he saved the manuscripts from the mice and worms of the monastic libraries and also from the ignorance of the monks, sold them instead 1.000 pounds in the Bodleian Library.
The Paradise
The manuscript is referred to in international literature as a "symbolic garden" or "theoretical paradise". But the word "paradise", derived from ancient Persian pairi-daeza, which meant "grove" or "pleasure garden" (composed of the words "pairi" and "daeza", i.e. "garden" and "wall") denotes an outdoorsman, walled space.
Safe environment, mild climate, water sufficiency, abundance and variety of fruits are the elements that make up Paradise, according to the early Christian understanding, which drew its inspiration from Genesis and from Revelation. Garden tracks anyway, which adorned mansions of the early Christian years, have been identified in many areas of the Middle East and in Istanbul itself, while public parks are often mentioned in written sources, which were created at the expense of the emperor.
"And God planted paradise in Eden towards the east and placed man there, he created, and God sent out of the earth every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, and the tree of life in the midst of paradise, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil" (Gen. 2, 8-9). A, unique and insurmountable has been man's goal ever since: the search for Paradise. Even if it is not the same for everyone, despite what the Bible says, even if the Paradise of one is opposed to that of another.

Depardieu is Russian to avoid high taxation

Putin signed the decision by which the actor changes citizenship

While the debate in France on the taxation of very high incomes has not stopped, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that, as promised, grants the Russian citizenship to the well-known French actor Gerard Depardieu that he had requested… tax "asylum" in Moscow.
With a brief announcement from the Russian presidency on Thursday, it was announced that the Russian president signed the decision by which the actor gets Russian citizenship. The wording of the announcement, Reuters notes, implies that Depardieu had submitted a relevant request.
The Depardieu case has consistently returned to the debate over Hollande's plan to raise taxes on very high incomes.
Paris is now considering how to amend plans to tax the wealthiest citizens after they were struck down by the Constitutional Court, may not abandon the reference to its scale 75%, a government source said.
At 29 December the Constitutional Court ruled that the extraordinary taxation with 75% of incomes over one million euros is unfair for this year, undermining the main campaign slogan of President Francois Hollande.
