Athens Festival 2012: Ali and Hedi Thabet – Rayahzone in Piraeus 260

Brothers Ali and Hedi Thabet invite us on a political journey into the world of desires and the Holy, with the show "Rayahzone”,which will be presented in Piraeus 260 (THE), at 14, 15 and 16 June, in the context of the Athens Festival.

Ali and Hedi Thabet were born in Belgium, from a Tunisian father and a Belgian mother. From a young age they were involved in the circus and soon dance was added to their interests, the theater, writing and photography. Even when Hedy Tabet was hit with age 18 years of bone cancer and two years later he lost his leg, his love for the stage remained years later, created together with his brother the show we will enjoy.

“Rayahzone” is a journey (Rayah in Arabic), where we are invited to participate in order to disturb our arcane and tormenting inner anxieties in order to seek balance. On this trip, the bodies, the voice and percussion are the protagonists.

For the performance, the two brothers collaborated with the dancer Nicolas Vladyslav and the musicologist Sofyann Ben Youssef who, with five Sufi musicians, gave the music a leading role, thus making an indirect political statement, as Sufi music in Tunisia was banned at various times in history. In the show, the music does not complement the steps and movements of the dancers, but it is done – with her breath and voice as tools – vehicle that leads viewers to the Divine. As God created man by breathing into him his Spirit, man breathes out the voice of God and touches the Divine, through the song.

Finally the "Rayahzone", that we will watch at this year's Athens Festival is not just an absolutely perfect artistic performance but a journey of self-awareness. And the purpose of the Thabet brothers is to bring into confrontation and to transcend in space and time the three different dimensions of existence: the death, reason and madness, which are personified on stage by the three dancers and to connect their viewers with the little god that we all hide inside.

A few words about the show

A great musical theater production, VAT to ATTIC, father of all modern Greek troubadours.
A 20-member troupe of elite actors, singers, musicians and dancers "looking for ATTIC", the style and ethos of an entire era, through memories and senses, texts and songs that sealed our sensibility.

A throwback without a "retro" mood, but with a lot of humor, sarcasm, tenderness and emotion. At the heart of it is a hearty selection of the most beloved songs of Atticus and other leading composers of the time.

The show follows the "life saga" of Cleon Triantaphyllos-Atticus (1885-1944) and his generation. It starts from Alexandria and his Athens 1900, with the walks in Zappeion, the carols and musical evenings at the mansion of the Triantaphyllos family. It takes place in Belle Epoque Paris, with the famous Mistenge pacing at the Follies Bergères and the young Cleon at the Conservatory, musical theaters and cabarets to begin his career as "Attic" – songwriter. We follow him on his adventurous tours around the world, from America to the Russia of the Bolshevik revolution!

To end up in the Athens of the Interwar period, with "variety shows" and the famous "Mantra"! "Mantra" was Attic's temple of art and functioned for a whole decade (1930-1940), combining in a unique way elements from the Parisian boutique, the Athenian inspection, it's boring, the tavern and the music-philology gallery! It was the nursery of many great artists, as well as some of the most important lyricists and entertainers.

When tourism persists culturally

The romantic coloring of the English traveler artist Edward Lear reveals – in an exhibition at the Asian Art Museum of Corfu – the virgin landscapes of the Ionian Islands of the 19th century, freed from the archeology of his time

"Around 3 in the morning we anchored in the beautiful paradise of Corfu and looked out over the calmest of seas, with the ridges of the hills covered with cypress trees and dotted with country houses all the way to the sea…», he wrote in his diary on 19 April 1848 the English traveler Edward Lear.
It is one of the notes of admiration of the English illustrator and poet of the Victorian era. Who in the spirit of 19th century travelers traveled to Greece, he was fascinated by the Ionian Sea and settled in Corfu painting watercolors, oil paintings, creating drawings and engravings.
As meticulous by nature and impressed by the beauty of the place, Lear detailed the corners of his works and the pages of his diary, and it is no exaggeration to think that if he were alive today he would be a successful social media user..
Two hundred years since his birth, the relationship of the philanthropic English artist with the Ionian Islands and especially with Corfu is reflected in the large exhibition that opened at the Museum of Asian Art under the roof of the Palaces of Archangelos Michael and Agios Georgios in Corfu.
Culture and tourism: the new product that Corfu has added to the choices of its visitors. Lear, with endless horizons, rocks bathed in evening light, seas framed by the dawn breeze, offers his share.
In the middle of the 19th century he traveled on foot or on horseback in unexplored Greece. The virgin landscapes that met his gaze he rendered in paintings. “More and more I'm getting the impression that eventually I'll mostly be known as “The Painter of Greece”», he declared himself as soon as he settled in Corfu, the 1856.
The exhibition "Edward Lear and the Ionian Islands" captures moments from his travels in the Ionian. Its significance lies in the fact that "in the vaguely melancholic landscapes from the Ionian Islands that Lear renders with romantic descriptiveness, his compatriots remotely collect the first information about the area", points out the curator of the exhibition and director of the Asian Art Museum Despina Zerniotis.
Twentieth of twenty-one children in the family of stockbroker Jeremiah Lear and his wife Ann, he was known in his homeland for poems and writings with paradoxologies (nonsense) and works with zoological illustrations. However, with the landscapes from his excursions in the Mediterranean he secured his living.
"The entirety of his Greek production constitutes a unique treasury of visual evidence for the natural environment of Greece in the 19th century. For the image of the landscape before the neo-Greek deformation and development interventions", Fani-Maria Chigaku points out, painting curator at the Benaki Museum.
Lear's humor prompted him to capture even snapshots of the daily lives of the inhabitants: villagers in local costumes of the Ionian Islands chat in front of huts or churches, they pose next to goats, while in his sketches he captured details from weddings and local festivals.

This research also identified in these depths of traces of sliding networks, who often cause disasters in unbearable wrecks and on the other hand rejected the theory that ancient merchant ships were sailing very close to the coasts.
The on -site address of the research on the ESA's side had the diving archaeologist Dr.. Curcumemel. The contribution and cooperation of the crew of the O/C Aegean and the ELKETHE scientific groups was important in the whole research..
